Tips on Eating Healthy & Feeling Good: Snacks?

Hi everyone,

Let's start a conversation! I really try to eat healthy throughout the day, but preparing healthy snacks is tough for me. Anyone have tips on eating healthy and feeling good snacks? On-the-go healthy snacks? My fruit and nut mix is getting old!

I forgot to mention, the easiest for me on the run is making a smoothy. It takes about 5 minutes and i'll be full for a few hours. Try adding avocato and/or a raw egg to it and you'll be going strong for a good couple of hours.

If you want some really healthy snacks, I suggest making yourself some kale chips or my favorite, raw deserts. They are so easy to make, are super healthy snacks and they're sweet! Its the best way to go. I recommend raw powerbars or brownies that keeps in your fridge for a good week. I have a recipe for brownies on my blog but you can google raw power bars. I've been making powerbars for my toddler but rolling little balls instead of cutting it in squares and she loves it :-) . Adding hemp seeds or chia seeds to any of your salads or yogurt will give you great health benefits also.

No problem! Finding healthier options to what you are used to eating is a specialty of mine. :) In general, the healthiest foods are those that have no labels (fresh fruits and veggies) and those whose labels have few ingredients and all of which are in English (no mono-Di-glyceride-sulfate, etc.)! Keep in mind that salt and sugar are to be avoided and keep an eye out for unhealthy trans fats (hydrogenated oils). Remember that when you are reading nutrition labels, the calories and fat calorie numbers are not as important than the source of those calories. For example: raw coconut products are high in fat cals but because they are a healthy fat, and a whole, unprocessed food, they will contain vitamins, nutrients, and fiber that a processed food will not have.

Thank You, Health Coach Angie This is great to remember about the sugar and what is does to our bodies.I am working on getting use to all these herbs and spices in place of salt and butter.I appreciate all these healthy snack tips like the nut recipe and popcorn recipe and I agree that the possibilties are endless in the way you see healthy snacks.
I went out this weekend and bought a popcorn machine now I am so glad I did.I hope you keep in touch because it seems snacking out or finding ways to be creative is a struggle for us.Do you have ideas for eating on the run? so it doesn't get so borrowing or in my case, fast food frenzy, I grab anything just so I don't pass out.I am doing my best to plan ahead take food,snacks with me when I leave the house,instead of eating junk food on the run. Again this has been a great help.

Hi ladies! I'm going to weigh in on the healthy snack discussion: don't forget that herbs and seasonings are your friend! They can add AMAZING variety of flavors to what you're eating! For example: take some plain, stove-popped popcorn and add seasonings while it's still hot so they'll stick - you can try: rosemary and olive oil, thyme and tarragon, oregano and parmesan (add in some chili flakes and basil - it tastes like pizza!), cinnamon and ginger, chipotle and garlic, onion and smoked paprika.... or get exotic with some curry or Chinese five spice... the possibilities are endless! You can flavor nuts in the same way by coating them with a blend of water and egg whites, coating them in the spice mixture, and baking on a cookie sheet until dry.
Also, remember that snacks with sugar send a signal to your body to hold on to fat (which is undesirable for many), and snacks with healthy fats (like nuts) help you to feel satiated. Hope this helps!

Welcome to our group this is so great read all your healthy snack ideas.Roasted chickpeas and crunchy. We really need ideas like that.Fruit and veggies with a twist and of course three bean salad,nice touch.Smoothies are really great to, so many things we all can do with a blender to spice things up.I must say we have been looking for someone like you to help us think outside the box. Hi Danielle,

If you have some prep time, roasted chickpeas make a crunchy, healthy snack and you can flavor them however you want. Hummus and raw veggies is also a favorite of mine. If you have a fridge (this one also requires a little prep) you can make some quick 3 bean salad and cucumber type salads that are mostly veggies in individual to-go containers that you can grab and eat when you get the munchies. You mentioned apples, but a cut apple with some peanut or almond butter is amazing and really satisfying. If you are home I am a little obsessed with smoothies at the moment, throw a bunch of stuff in the blender and in minutes you have a healthy meal or snack! If you just want something to munch on but aren't necessarily hungry, they have these pop chips that are affordable, low in calories and don't have any funky ingredients!
