I have had some spotting before my period, am I pregnant?

So, I had my period on the first week of October. It lasted it's usual 5 days. Today (21st) I had some irregular spotting, and i've never had this before. My period isn't due for another week (last week of oct) or the first week of next month. My breasts have been tender for a week or so, this usually happens when it's getting close to my period time. I have never had sex before, but some other 'stuff' such as 'fooling around.' I did have an incident where I was panicing that I might be pregnant, but I looked it up online and was told there was basically no chance in it ever happening. So that calmed me down but then I had this weird spotting happening, and it wasn't brown blood or anything. I thought it was the start of my period early, but then later in the day nothing else was coming out. I'm a little worried that I am pregnant or something is wrong with me, so if someone could help me out asap that would really be awesome. :)

Hi and thanks for your question,

If you have never had sex (intercourse) before, it is unlikely that you are pregnant. If you are concerned that your "fooling around" may have made this a possibility you could take a pregnancy test to set your mind at ease.

There are other reasons for spotting in the second half of your cycle. It is most likely due to a hormonal imbalance, which can be affected by things like changes in nutrition, stress, activity level and certain medications.

A normal menstrual cycle is 21-35 days long (maybe 5-7 days longer in puberty). The duration of flow is normally 4-6 days long and 78% of blood loss occurs in the first 2 days of menstruation.

If your symptoms continue or your cycle becomes irregular you should see your doctor for an evaluation.

Wow, thank you! I have started a new diet, and there has been a fair amount of stress in my life at the moment, so that's probably the reason for the spotting. Your answer really set my mind at ease. As for the pregnant situation, I think worrying about being pregnant or not has made me stressed out more. Therefore maybe leading to the strange period cycle?

But again, thank you. :)
