Q:

I am having the worst anxiety about going to the gynecologist. Is that normal? What are ways to combat it?

I have known my gynecologist for years, yet my yearly exam brings on such a panic that I can barely keep from having a full blown panic attack and crying. Is this normal? It is not the gynecologist, as I trust them completely and fully knowing I'll be taken care of in the best way, but I think just the going. It doesn't make a lot of sense as it's irrational, but I still can't seem to calm myself down.

I believe the panic comes from the guilt. I am a Christian, and premarital sex is so not okay. I'm scared something will happen like I'll have an STD and they'll find out. I know I can't be pregnant since I've had a period many times since. It's the fear of my parents finding out.

That is very understandable. Fortunately, even if you happen to have an STD, your parents do not have to find out. You can be treated right away and no consequences will follow from your parent unless you tell your yourself; which I'm sure you won't.
You should feel free to act within your own convictions. Your parents may never approve of you, but punishing you for having sex is not a natural consequence. It is one that they fabricated due to their own convictions.
So I suggest that you start owning your own convictions without fear of your parents judgment, because that is not a full and healthy way to live.

Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
This is not necessarily everyones experience. I suggest that you sit in a quiet place and recalled any past trauma that seeing the gynecologist may be triggering. It could be that you associate the gynecologist with a bad experience you had in the past.
Once you identify the trigger, I suggest you talk with a therapist in order to heal the trauma.
I hope that helps.
