Q:

How to get rid of REALLY bad period pain?

Over the last couple of months my cramps have gotten worse and worse, to the point where I can barely walk. This is a very big problem because sometimes I can't even get out of bed the pain is so bad. The only thing that seems to work is 3 ibuprofen, a very warm heating pad, and sleep - all together. This is fine for weekends and nights, but I need something that will help during the long run, and most of all at school. I don't want my period to stop me from living my daily life. If possible, please also recommend something to help a rather heavy flow. Thank you!

I just turned 16, I'm at my grandparents house and it's too early for me to be up, but this pain is killing me. I have taken Iprofen, if hasn't helped. I can't shower yet, what do I do? My mum was going to take me to the hospital a couple of nights ago.

I'm 15, and got my period at a young age (12), and cramps are really bad for me. Except I have an irregular period, and a heavy flow. So when my period comes, it really hits. Nothing works for me, I've tried most pills, putting my feet up, and more. I've talked to my doctor and they have nothing to say which makes me super upset because they should know.

ADVICE from someone who suffered extremly heavy flows and lots of pain due to polycystic ovaries syndrome.
1. If you feel your pain is too much, or your flow too heavy, go to a doctor or talk to a parent/adult you trust. It can be a sign of underlying problem/illness, but even if it's not, you will get pills specifically for this. It can be embarassing, I know, even humiliating, but it can save you lot of pain (and underwear). Keep your ground if someone tells you to 'suck it up' or 'it always hurts, you're overreacting'. No one knows your pain better than you do, especially if it's preventing you from normal activities.
2. Heat is always good, whether it's a heat pad, or a small pillow on your abdomen. That being said, socks to keep your feet warm can work wonders.
3. Take a hot shower, letting the water on your stomach. If nothing else, it'll make you feel clean.
4. Eat a piece of chocolate or your favorite sweet.
5. Rubbing/palpating abdomen where it hurts can help. Also, if you have small pillow, curl around it so it pushes into your abdomen. The pressure can relax the muscles.
6. Rub/press the two dimples on your lower back. I know this sounds crazy, but it helped me in the past.
7. Lie on your back and bend your legs above your stomach. Keep it for several minutes.
8. If you feel like crying, do. It will make you feel a lot better.
9. Try to keep your mind of it. Play a game, read a book, whatever grabs your attention. It doesn't help if you focus on the pain.
10. Drink lots of fluids, preferably water and juices. It can be a real game changer.
11. This is bit of a silly one, but if you have someone to rant to about how awful your periods are, do it. Not only it's a distraction, but (like crying) it makes you feel better.
12. Sleep plenty if you can, even if it's lot more than usually. Periods are exhausting for your body.
13. Eat plenty of red meat and/or iron supplements. Last thing you need with heavy flow are symptoms of blood loss.

I hope this helps. All these tips work for me or for my friends, so with luck they will for you. I'm afraid this is very individual but they're worth a try.

I'm 14 and lying in my bed right now. It's 3 in the morning, I'm crying from pain and can't get up to take something for my cramps. I can't move without it hurting. I can't fall asleep from the pain. I need help because my hot water bottle is running out of heat and I'm getting scared. I need a reponse really soon for something I can do myself without having to disturb everyone in my house by getting up. If anyone has any suggestions that would be amazing.

Hi Anonymous,

Have you felt this way before, when you had your period?

Is the pain in your upper abdomen, where your stomach is or lower abdomen?

Is a parent aware of how you are feeling? Your parent should contact your pediatrician's office. The stomach pain and disgusted feeling associated with food may be signs of a stomach virus or reaction to something you ate.

Regards,
Maryann
