Q:

Accidentally took out NuvaRing 1 week early and had unprotected sex the day after

I mistakenly removed my NuvaRing (which I have been using for over a year) out a week after only two weeks, having marked it wrong on my calender. I then had unprotected sex the day after (Thursday). Now (Saturday) I am experiencing a heavy flow of blood, cramps, and period-like symptoms. Is there a risk of pregnancy? What should I do?

Guide

Hi Anonymous and thanks for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

There's a risk of pregnancy any time you have unprotected sex, with the risk being the highest around your ovulation time.

What you are describing seems like signs of an oncoming period which would indicate that you are not pregnant.

The best way to know if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. Nobody can tell you over the Internet if you are pregnant or not. A pregnancy test can be taken 14-21 days after unprotected sex and when taken correctly, should be accurate.

Hope that helps,

Pam
