Hi Anon - There is nothing dangerous or unsanitary about swimming while menstruating. When there are issues they are around used tampons and menstrual cups being left in the pools without regard for other people who will also be swimming there. Basically women can swim on any day of the month whether they are having their period or not. It is cleaner and neater to wear a tampon while doing so, but not wearing one and possibly leaking some menstrual fluid while swimming is not dangerous for the woman having her period or other swimmers. In terms of health risks there is some potential for pool chemicals like chlorine to irritate the vulva and vagina which could lead to a risk for a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, so taking a shower immediately after swimming in a chlorinated pool is a good practice and one should avoid sitting around too long in a wet bathing suit. Hope that gives you more insight and some peace of mind.

Best,

Pat
