The first cause of pink spotting between menstrual periods is ovulation bleeding -- the release of an egg from the ovaries. According to the American Pregnancy Association, some women experience light spotting after ovulating, sometimes the discharge is light pink in color. Brown discharge can happen after your period, but also mid-cycle as well as early in pregnancy, at the time your period would normally come. If your period does not come at all, take another pregnancy test to ease your mind. It's usually advised to wait at least 2 1/2 weeks after sex when levels of hCG are high enough to be detected.
