Guide (reply to Jeanette Reckell)

Hi Jeanette,

Glad to hear that. It is so important to not overlook significant warning signs such as changes in normal bowel habits and pain that persists or worsens.

Differentiating a diagnosis based on symptoms alone can be challenging for healthcare professionals.

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition. Inflammation caused by Crohn's disease can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people.

Intestinal obstruction is a blockage that keeps food or liquid from passing through your small intestine or large intestine (colon). Causes of intestinal obstruction may include fibrous bands of tissue adhesions in the abdomen that form after surgery, an inflamed intestine associated with Crohn's disease, infected pouches in your intestine referred to as diverticulitis, hernias and colon cancer.

Without treatment, the blocked parts of the intestine can die, leading to serious problems. However, with prompt medical care, intestinal obstruction often can be successfully treated.

Jeanette, thank you again for sharing.
