An untreated sexually transmitted infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which is a very serious condition. It is an infection of a woman's reproductive organs and is often a complication of some STDs, like chlamydia and gonorrhea.
There is an increased risk for getting PID if a woman:
Has an STD and do not get treated;
Has more than one sex partner;
Has a sex partner who has sex partners other than you;
Have had PID before;
Is sexually active and are age 25 or younger;
Douches
Uses an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control.
