Why do I want to have this done? What will it achieve for me?

You need to be honest with yourself and your surgeon. What are your surgeon’s credentials? What are the benefits of the procedures as well as the potential problems? What are the alternatives? Am I willing to make the commitment to following the surgeon’s preoperative and postoperative instructions to get the optimal results?

Surgery is not for everyone. I am not an evangelist about it but it is nice that the option exists for those who want improvement and feel that it is important for them.

For many, improvement may be a haircut and for others a new dress, exercise or teeth whitening and for some, it is the option of plastic surgery as long as it is age appropriate and realistic. Some of the most frequently performed procedures in La Jolla, San Diego and nationally are liposuction, breast augmentation, nasal surgery (rhinoplasty), eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), face lifts, body contouring including liposuction, abdominoplasties or a combination of procedures often termed “Mommy Make-overs”.

There are many new and better fillers and improved techniques. In order to get the best aesthetic results, the procedures need to be individualized whether they are surgical procedures or less invasive fillers and neurotoxins like Botox or Dysport.

Less invasive procedures have a significant role in cosmetic (aesthetic) improvement and while they are often non-surgical, they are still medical and should be performed in a proper medical setting by appropriately trained professionals While I absolutely believe in and use of many of these more frequently performed less invasive procedures including skin care, fillers and Dysport or Botox in the appropriate patient, I am also seeing an increasing number of patients for surgery who want a longer standing and improved result than they were able to achieve with the non-surgical techniques as well as with a variety of procedures that some physicians, manufacturers, or spas promote which promise more than they can realistically achieve.

Unfortunately, there is a myriad of procedures and technologies that are being hyped by manufacturers, marketers, spas and “medi-spas” that have no scientific validity and no data about safety and efficacy. Plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery have all of the options available so the appropriate procedures can be chosen for the individual rather than trying to fit the individual into a particular pre-chosen or marketed procedure which may not be the best option.

Patients frequently want “magical” procedures that are new, non-invasive, give maximum improvement, have no down time, require no anesthesia, produce no discomfort, have no recovery, need no incisions, and are delivered at minimal cost. There is however, nothing that meets those criteria.
