A leimyomas, commonly referred to as uterine fibroids, are noncancerous growths of the uterus. Often, they appear during childbearing years.
An atypical leimyomas refers to a fibroid that has characteristics that are not typical or atypical. This type of fibroid can alter its shape or size (pleomorphic), has a low rate of cell division, and the tumor will not die on its own without medical intervention.
Based on an article published last year in The International Journal of Gynecologic Pathology, most tumors remained benign (did not become malignant), some women received a myomectomy and others had a hysterectomy. A myomectomy is the surgical removal of the uterine fibroid only.
