It is not know exactly what causes fibroids. They do seem to shrink after menopause, so it is thought that hormones may stimulate their growth.
We have a lot of information on fibroids: https://www.empowher.com/condition/uterine-fibroids, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has a page on them: http://www.acog.org/publications/patient_education/bp074.cfm. In addition, the National Institutes of Health has a good educational page: http://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/Uterine_Fibroids.cfm.
Thanks for writing. I hope this information will be helpful to you.
