Yes, I believe that sometimes doctors and patients are too quick to prescript or ask for a med to help out with certain issues. But in many instances, people don't know how to deal with their mood changes or other issues without the help of the drug. It is unfortunate because the medications usually come with unwanted side affects and can sometimes make the person very miserable.
The decision to take medications to help with mood changes and other conditions should be a well thought out one. Will the side effects outweigh the benefits? Only a patient who is on mood stabilizers can really say.
