Even though I am sorry to hear all of you are having the same issue with brown discharge as I am, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. It is really embarrassing and after 4 years of it....very annoying. I too had the same unhelpful response from doctors. They just kept assuming it was "old blood at the end of periods, which was normal". It is NOT normal, because prior to four yrs ago, I didn't go through this. I have my normal five day cycles and then another four to six days of this brown discharge that smells bad. I have a thing against an odor which comes from there, as I'm sure all of you do too.
After doing some research, and putting two and two together, I came to the conclusion this is a build-up of material/tissue, etc. in the uterus. The sure way to stop the brown discharge entirely (and once and for all) is by having a D and C performed, where a GYN will go in and scrape the lining of the uterine walls. This is an outpatient procedure and the patient only needs a few days of rest/taking it easy, no sex, douching or tampon use for approximately four weeks; give or take.
I found there can be several causes for this material accumulation in the uterus, including past abortion procedures, hormone imbalance, uterine cysts/fibroids and past miscarriage. I then realized the cause of my "problem": About four years ago, I had a very early-term miscarriage, not even knowing I was pregnant. It wasn't the first time I had one in the past, as I am now 39 years of age. The first miscarriage I had, before I got pregnant with my daughter (back when I was in my early to mid-twenties), I didn't have any unusual discharge/symptoms afterward. Therefore, when I had the one four years ago, I didn't anticipate needing physician care.
I found this post this morning, when searching for alternatives to having a D and C, to find if there was something else I could do to cleanse my uterus, thus expelling all foreign material which is obviously causing the brown discharge. I hope my info here helped some, if not all of you. Best of luck and please post a reply on here if you come across a safe alternative to D and C's (they are reasonably safe as well...just expensive without insurance).
