Dr. Dugoua discusses a naturopathic solution to treating a pregnant woman on antidepressants.

Dr. Dugoua:
A naturopathic solution for pregnant women antidepressants is a tricky one. We don’t know as much as we’d like to know about St. John’s wort. The literature has one case report which said this one person was fine, but one person is not a lot to base your entire treatment protocol on. So we definitely need more research in this area.

If there is someone who has depression, is very concerned about it, then this would be a case where you definitely would want them to go for regular counseling throughout their pregnancy to try to balance that, should they choose to decrease their dose or come off their dose.

There’s been some studies with higher dose fish oils; however, going to very high dose fish oils that we have seen in depression treatment, no one has explored that in pregnancy to see if there if there would be any side effects. So it’s a tricky one; it’s a very tricky one.
