Recently USA Today published an article about at home remedies for winter skin; I found it terribly useful for those of us living in the high desert or just plain desert. Most of the ingredients used are right there in your house, and the techniques are extraordinarily simple.

For exfoliation put sugar in your palms and rub them together. To care for your lips, try using a soft toothbrush that has been dipped in baking soda and then brush it along your lips before applying Vaseline. These tips are courtesy of Francesca Fusco, a New York dermatologist.

Avoid hot showers (that's a hard one to do),and use heavier lotions "to keep your natural oils intact," says Dr. Suzan Obagi, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh. She advises switching to cream based products because they are better able to trap the oil in the skin. And that really does makes sense. Obagi also recommends using Vaseline petroleum lip balm instead of ones that are medicated or have fragrances.

Lastly, Vesna Petronic-Roci, from the University of Chicago Medical Center has some rather unusual tips for beautiful feet.

1. Remove the thick skin from your heel with a pumice stone until the skin feels softer.
2. Apply crazy glue or liquid band aid on any cracks.
3. "Moisturize with a heavy-cream lotion."
4. "Wrap duct tape or wear a sock on your foot to protect it."

That does it, although I really don't know about the duct tape.
