If you are between the ages of 40 and 55, and often find yourself scoping out the nearest restroom for “just in case” when you’re out and about, you may have a real medical problem that needs attention from a doctor. You may have overactive bladder (OAB).

OAB, according to the Mayo Clinic website, is a problem with bladder storage function that causes a sudden urgency to urinate. The urge can be difficult to suppress, and can cause a woman suffering from this condition to decrease her activity because of feelings of embarrassment and being self-conscious.

A Yahoo! Health article stated there is a connection between perimenopause and OAB. As the level of estrogen drops as you get closer to the onset of menopause, normally healthy tissue of the bladder and urethra can begin to thin and dry out, making the bladder more susceptible to irritation and incontinence.

If this sounds like you, make an appointment to visit with your doctor. There are treatments available that could stop the cycle for you.
