I just had "Her Option" cryo ablation of my endometrial lining four days ago for heavy bleeding, cramps, anemia with my periods. I'd like to know if there are any other ladies out there who have had this procedure and their experience. Didi it work for you? Did it help with PMS too?

For the past year or so I have had crazy periods. Basically I have my whole period in a couple of hours. With a super plus tampon AND overnight maxipad I couldn't control it-excessive bleeding with lots of clots-then I just spotted for the rest of the week. Literally some days I couldn't get from the bathroom to my bedroom before needing a change. So today I had "Her Option" cryo ablation. Last night I took misoprostol to soften my cervix because that has been an issue in the past. Though I just finished my period last Friday, I awoke bleeding this morning. Today I have been crampy all day and still bleeding but very managable. I am wondering if anyone else had periods like me and if anyone else had misoprostol and how long they bled after the proceedure. Thanks for the input!

How are you feeling now, Em? I had the Her Option procedure on July 13, 2009. I also had misoprostol both the night before the procedure, and the morning of. I woke up spotting, too. But that didn't affect the procedure. Mine went fairly well. Cramping, but then my Dr. gave me something in my I.V. and I was OUT! Didn't need pain meds. later and only light discharge for two days. Then nothing for a week. Went for my re-check at eight days and things looked good. Then the next day bleeding started. Have bled for over a week now. It's just now time for my period. I'm not sure I'll know when it even starts! LOL! I never really had the watery discharge that everyone else mentions. Just bright, very fluid bleeding. Hope it doesn't last much longer.

I am hoping someone can ease my mind about Her Option. I don't know anyone personally who's had this procedure done, so...very confused! First a bit about my menstrual history. I get my period about every 26-31 days. It usually lasts about 7 days. I have about 3 heavy days and the rest are just a drop here and there...for those light days, I really only need panty liners. For the heavy days, I use Always Maxi. In the 3 heavy days, I would use a total of about 12 - 15 maxi pads. I don't really see this as a "problem". But my doctor still feels that I need Her Option. Does my situation sound bad or "normal"???? I hope there is a doctor or a very experienced person out there who can shed some light on my situation. Thank you in advance for any advise.

Hi,
These are great questions:
- What is considered an "abnormally heavy period"?
- When is Her Option indicated (the recommended treatment option)?

Definition of "abnormal heavy period" (medical term: "menorrhagia")
- "Normal menstrual flow:
* Occurs every 21 to 35 days
* Lasts four to five days
* Produces a total blood loss of about 2 to 3 tablespoons"
- "Heavy menstrual flow:
* Produces a total blood loss of about 5 1/2 tablespoons or more
* Interferes with your life (see below "quiz")
* Causes tiredness, fatigue or shortness of breath (symptoms of anemia)"

When is Her Option the preferred treatment choice?
From the Her Option site (be mindful, they are selling their product, but I thought the information was relevant), questions to consider (online "quiz"):
1. Does your period last longer than seven days?
2. Do you use more than three pads or tampons per day?
3. Do you need to double up on feminine protection?
4. Do you become fatigued due to your heavy bleeding?
5. Do your heavy periods affect your social life, fitness or sexual intimacy?
6. Do you miss work because of your periods?
7. Does your menstrual flow include large clots?
8. Do you avoid leaving home for fear of accidents?
9. Do you avoid wearing light colored clothing during your period?
10. Does medication (birth control pills) fail to ease your symptoms?

Anon, after reading the above information and comparing it with your question... it sounds like your "heavy" period is not adversely effecting your lifestyle, is this correct? Some women have heavy periods; others have lighter periods. Just as some women's periods last 3 days...others' last 5 or 7 days. Your heavy days sound as thought they constitute a "heavy" period, and I'm wondering: do you have any other symptoms, such as fatigue, tiredness or shortness of breath? Did you visit the doctor for some help with your period, or was it just a normal exam and this topic came up during your medical history? Have they ruled out any underlying medical causes?

Lastly, there are many other options to consider, rather than surgery, for heavy bleeding (once diagnosed):
- Menorrhagia at EmpowHer
- Menorrhagia at Mayo Clinic
- Possible treatment options for heavy periods

I also wrote about this topic, if you would like to read the additional information: How to Know if Your Period is Normal.

I had Her Option on June 22, 2009 due to excessive bleeding and anemia.
The procedure was easy and painless... no need for any medications.
However, I've had watery/blood discharge for 3 weeks now. I started my first period after the procedure just yesterday and the cramps are rather intense. The bleeding doesn't seem to have diminished compared to prior to the procedure. I've had to wear the large maxipads since the procedure and change every few hours due to the discharge (I'm hoping this will cease soon... it's getting to be a nuisance).
My doctor did not give me any information on these "after effects" of the procedure, so I've decided to share my experiences with others so they may be informed. At this point, I can't say that this procedure is successful or not... I'll update this site in another few weeks.

I had HerOption done on June 18, 2009. I was give a 5 mg valium that I needed to take 1 hour before the procedure and then give a shot for pain medication just before the procedure. The procedure was done within 20 minutes and was not painful at all. When finished I did have slight crampiness but nothing that 2 Advil did not cure. I was ready to go the next day with no ill side effects. I did have the watery discharge like then said I would in the consent form. I did get my monthly on June 24th. It did not "gush" out like I had read in the other comments, in fact it was watery and it was just spotting. There is a slight smell but that comes along with wearing pads and the air hitting the blood. It is now June 26th and my period is basically gone. Maybe I was a lucky and the procedure worked as it was supposed to. I do need to say that everyone's body is different along with everyone's threshold of pain. To me it was cakewalk and I would highly recommend it.

Hi,
Update on me (my posting on April 14, 2009). I had the Her Option done this past Friday, June 19th. Everything went well for me. Little pain for me and the meds/injection from office took time to get out of my system. I'm back at work Tues. I'm only experiencing alittle watery discharge so far. I pray this works for me.... Good Luck to everyone as well.

Hi
Update on mine, I posted on the other page, I had Her Option done Feb 23,2009 and the most problem I had was the watery discharge. MIne was done in the office since he does alot of procedures there, I was happy my Insurance had paid for everything. well I had my period the end of March it was for 3-4 days but really nothing,I have had nothing since and this is June.
I had gone to see him and everything was fine. I guess I was a lucky one. I had those bad periods and had to stay home from work one day a month and it was going on for years, even getting up all nitelong...no sleep. I know a few postings I have read sound all familiar. The thing I going thru now is premenpause. I know alot have gone thru it when they are in there 40's but I guess I am a late one going to be 55 and I was lucky excpet for the bleeding, I wish i knew about the Her Option a few years ago. Anyone who decides I would say go for it but it does not work for everyone....Good Luck to all
Thanks, Pat

I had the Her Option procedure 6/17/09. The procedure itself went very well. However, walking out to the car and for the rest of the day, I had extreme cramping. Thank goodness for Vicadin! The following day, I didn't feel too well. Cramping wasn't as bad, but just annoying. Got the watery discharge - not looking forward to wearing pads for the next two weeks!! Hopefully, the procedure works to stop the awful heavy periods I've experienced for years. Reading everyone's comments has helped me to understand what to expect - Thanks. Mary

Hi all. Thank you all for your postings. I also thank you in advance for responding to this. I am scheduled to have the her choice procedure on 6/26/09. I am 45 years old. My periods have become so heavy and so long that I have 2 week periods, and then 10-14 days without a period. My periods have become so heavy I change a super plus tampon every hour for 3-4 days. Needless to say, that is exhausting. During the short time I am not having my period, I have “PMS” symptoms. By that I mean mostly swollen, tender, breast; bloating; severe back pain; and joint pain. The back pain had gotten so bad I went to a spine surgeon. The good news is my back is not the problem.

I am adopted and don’t know my medical history, so I will not take hormones due to the increase risks for cancer. So, my options are her option or hysterectomy. I don’t think I am ready for the hysterectomy, so I am set for the her option procedure. My pre-procedure appointment is 6/23. I plan to ask my OB-GYN these questions, but I wanted to get some other input.

For those of you who have had the procedure, how does it affect the “PMS” symptoms? Typically, how long are you to not wear a tampon? Typically, how long are you to not have sex? How bad is the bloating? I mean do I need bigger pants? How long does it last?
