I just had "Her Option" cryo ablation of my endometrial lining four days ago for heavy bleeding, cramps, anemia with my periods. I'd like to know if there are any other ladies out there who have had this procedure and their experience. Didi it work for you? Did it help with PMS too?

I just had heroption done 3 days ago on April 15, 2010.. I was also told the procedure would cause no pain with mild cramping afterwards. I can't say the procedure itself was horrible....definite cramping, but tolerable. The post procedure pain was not something I expected. I was nauseas and nearly passed out as I was leaving the Drs office and got terrible hot flashes to where I had to lay back down. The ride home was excruciating and I felt like I was in full blown labor. I couldn't take a pain reliever right away because I was so sick, but I managed to get a snack and take one. It definitely made the cramps more tolerable, but I vomited when I got home. I literally bled through a pad, my underwear and shorts on the way home because of the amount of fluid.

In the 3 days since the procedure I've had tons of watery/bloody discharge and I still have not had a bm. The cramping is there, but managed with percocet apap. I think I did a little too much today (moved my horses around) and the cramps are worse with bleeding again. They definitely don't state things right when they said "normal activities" in a day or so. I am tired and very sore.

Beyond this I will update as the weeks/months go on. My periods were every month for 7-8 days with full bleeding all days with clots. I honestly would be happy in the end with a few days of spotting or bleeding. Anything would be good compared to what I've gone through.

I hope this was all worth it because at the stage I am right now I would not recommend it....that all might change in the coming months though!

Best wishes to all!
Sharon

Sharon, your experience sounds very much like mine minus the nausea and vomiting. My dr didn't advise me to take it easy but I did that on my own for a few days after the procedure. I did find that bleeding and discharge increased with activity. My procedure was back in August 2009, my first post procedure period was awful - heavy bleeding, clotting, etc. - a lot like after giving birth. Over the months, they have progressively improved. The length of my periods haven't reduced (I also have 5-7 days) but the flow has reduced to just spotting. The first couple of months you may be questioning yourself - why did I do this!?!?... but it will get better, it did for me. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the results I gained from doing the procedure.

I had my procedure on April 1, 2010, i also was not told what would happen after the procedure, the dr. acted as if this is no big deal, that the procedure would only take a few minutes and the after would be wonderful, just a mild watery/bloody discharge for a few days...NOT WEEKS.... Since my procedure I've had the discharge with some tissue coming out from time to time, and also what i noticed is the discharge had a mild foul smell to it. I called the dr. to let him know and he prescribed antibiotics, but the smell is still there., which interferes with having sex. How long do I have to wait in order to have sex? Its now April 18, 2010 and I still havent.... does anyone have a similiar experience??

6 months down and still get periods...lasting about 3-5 days... Not super heavy but I was regular like clock-work within 1 day or two and NOW I am 3-4 days later than usual which is a pain now....PMS isn't as bad but it is by no means gone for good! I do not recommend this Her Option procedure if you think your period will be permanently gone....I get it but used to be brown to start with ==now it's full force RED and takes about 3-5 days to go away. It isn't as heavy but still there unfortunately! Hysterectomy down the road for me. It costs about 4500.00 to have this done if you don't have insurance.

Update- I first posted in early October after having undergone the cryoablation on September 30, 2009, and have to say it was a success, although I was not one of the lucky ones whose period was totally eliminated. My procedure was relatively easy (see October 1 post), and I have since had four periods. While they are still frequent (ranging from every 22-25 days), I no longer am experiencing one extremely heavy day where I leak through even if I change my tampon hourly. I would say that my periods are moderate at best, which means I don't have to schedule the day around my proximity to a bathroom and my night not sleeping for fear of an accident. While I'm still anemic and still need iron infusions, I feel like I can live my life again. I would recommend this procedure to anyone.

Anon - Thanks for providing this update on your procedure - it's good to know that you feel it was a success. I bet not having to schedule your day around bathroom proximity has made a real difference, as well as being able to sleep comfortably. We appreciate all of the information you've shared to help others and wish you all the best.
Take care, Pat

Thank you Pat. I'm back on the site for the first time in a few months. I'm now seven months post procedure, and all is still going well. I'm a bit more irregular than I was (in terms of period frequency), but I attribute that to the fact that I just turned 52 and it's probably menopause related! Periods are still every month more or less, and moderate to light, and for that I'm grateful. Last month my hematologist even called to cancel my iron infusion since for the first month my ferritin level was high enough! Again if anyone has any hesitations about this procedure, if your period is really heavy, it can change your life.

I had the Her Option ablation done on July 28, 2009, to eliminate heavy, heavy, heavy periods. The first following the procedure month was as expected, constant watery sunshine-yellow discharge and spotting (dark brown/red). I did have one surprise chunky bit, but that was the worst (and grossest) of it. Altogther, I'd say the month following was more of an irritation than anything else, no major embarrasing moments or horrible smells or anything like that. The first period following the ablation was only slightly better than prior to the procedure, and I figured it hadn't worked. It was a little better, though, and not the "first-period-after" horror story that so many people have experienced. However, each subsequent period has been markedly improved to the point of only having spotting for a few days (about 3). This month (6 months out), I had one (yes, ONE) cramp, no PMS symptoms, and I have minimal spotting that truly doesn't require more than a panty liner. I have to say that I read the posts of people who had much worse experiences with the ablation procedure before I had it performed, and I was pretty nervous, but I am one of the lucky ones for whom it has worked beautifully. Incidentally,I also had the Essure procedure done a few days before the ablation, and that has also been completely problem-free. Based on my own success, I recommend the Her Option procedure without reservation. It changed my life as my doctor promised. I hope my post is helpful to anyone considering the procedure; I know the posts before mine helped me, and I thank you!

Hi again. It's been 4 weeks today since I had the cryo done. I actually just had my follow up exam with doctor and he says everything looks great. I'm sure the true test will be the next couple of periods but so far, so good!

Great---thanks for keeping us updated!

Let us know how you progress, and remember that it can "take several months before you experience the full effects of ablation" (American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians).
