I just had "Her Option" cryo ablation of my endometrial lining four days ago for heavy bleeding, cramps, anemia with my periods. I'd like to know if there are any other ladies out there who have had this procedure and their experience. Didi it work for you? Did it help with PMS too?

Hi Ellen, I had the procedure done in Sept. 2008 and have had difficulty since. The doctor did say it could be 6 months for final results. I had a heavy period the month after and in Nov. experenced another heavy period with severe pain. The doctor the put me on progesterone to slow it down and it stopped. The day after I finished the pills I had severe cramps, they lasted 5 days with my period in between. The cramps were so bad I went on Fioricet and another heavy painkiller to reduce the pain. The doctor then did an ultrasound and found no obstructions or blockages. Now we are just waiting to see if my next period is the same if so its on to another doctor to find the source of the pain.

Greetings,

I am new to this site. I had the heroption cryoablation procedure done in June of 2005. For the first couple of years my periods were very light and short. I was able to use panty liners and lite tampons for the 3-4 day time frame. I was thrilled. However, within the last year, my cycle is changing. I have had cycles that the lite tampon is not enough. At the moment I am on my 16th day of flow. This is weird.

The recent shift to regular tampons is better than the super plus tampons and maxi pad backups I had to use prior to the surgery. I am just worried that I am on a road that will lead me back to that state. I do not want to go there.

Yes, I have a call into my gyn and am waiting for a return call.

Any one out there who this far into their post-procedure experience that can give some insight?

Thanks for checking this out!! It definetly makes me feel better about having it done a second time. I keep hoping each month that my periods will get lighter but they don't. So I will probably have the second ablation done in a couple of months. Thanks again! This website is great!!

I had mine done in July, 2008. Just went for my 6 month check up. My dr. looked at my card I had to fill out every month to keep track of my periods. He asked me if I was happy with the results, which I am not 100% BUT my periods are only heavy for about a day and a half, only have to change my tampon every 3 hours instead of every hour. He said I could have the ablation done again or have a hysterectomy or wait it out until menopause as I am 50. He said it was up to me, whatever I wanted to put up with or have done. He did say everyone is different and this procedure works differently with everyone. I just wasn't one of the lucky ones. I would probably have the ablation done again vs the hysterectomy. It was very uncomfortable and I remember just wanting to brush his hands away and tell him to stop. It didn't really hurt just irritating. I will have to think about it, probably until spring and see what I want to do. Has anyone out there had it done a second time? If so, did it work any better?

Hi,

I started this thread back in June when I had the Her Option procedure. I will be having my 8th period since the procedure. I am sorry to say it didn't work for me!!!!! I was so hopeful and I kept thinking oh the next one will be better, but I think after 8 medium to still intense periods, I have to say ok didn't work. DOn't know what I will do next. I'm kinda taking a breather before I address it again. Didn't know you could have it (cryoablation) a second time until I read some of the posts. Hmmmmmmmmm..........

I did some research on repeat ablation, and found one study from 1992:

Source:
Journal of Reproductive Medicine 1992 Jul;37(7):629-35.
Endometrial ablation repeat procedures. Case studies.
by Gimpelson RJ, Kaigh J., Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, St. Luke's Hospital, Chesterfield, MO.
Access through: National Institutes of Health (NIH) PubMed

Article abstract:
"Of 143 women who underwent endometrial ablation from May 1986 through August 1991:
- 16 requested repeat endometrial ablation
- 7 underwent hysterectomy. Only two of the hysterectomies were performed for bleeding, and no hysterectomy was needed for any woman who had a repeat endometrial ablation.

For patients undergoing one ablation, the results were:
- 55 women with amenorrhea (38%)
- 32 women with staining (22%)
- 33 light flow (23%)
- 7 hysterectomies (5%)
- 16 patients requesting repeat endometrial ablation (11%)
(sounds like you are this 11%)

Repeat endometrial ablation (of the 16 patients above) resulted in:
- 10 women with amenorrhea (63%)
- 3 with staining (19%)
- 3 with light flow (19%)

Repeat endometrial ablation can eliminate the need for hysterectomy in women who continue to have bleeding problems after one endometrial ablation. Gynecologists should not hesitate to offer repeat ablation since the results will usually be excellent."

Does this information help? Please know that this article was published in 1992, and may be irrelevant information...but is a good article to print (at least abstract) and take to your doctor, to ask if any other studies have been published on this topic since 1992.

Sounds promising, to have a second ablation (from this one case study)!

I had Her Option done September 26th. My period last month wasn't as bad as they have been in the past, but this month is horrible. No clots, but heavy bleeding and some pretty bad cramps and nausea. Please tell me there's a chance that next month will be better.

So sorry you had a tough time.

Here's what the Her Option FAQ page says about periods after the procedure:

"The decrease in bleeding after a Her Option procedure varies from woman to woman. For some women, periods return to more “normal” levels. For others, bleeding is completely eliminated or they experience spotting just a few days a month."

If your period this month is actually worse than it was before your procedure, I think a call to the doctor is in order. And yes, there's a good chance that next month will be better. Every woman's body is different, and yours may just be taking longer to recover after the procedure.

Has anyone out there had a difficult second period after cryoablation (Her Option) and then got relief after that? We'd love to hear from you.

I just got over my second period. It was so bad, I was ready to go to the emergency room. The procedure itself wasn't bad at all. I was at work the next day. I had leakage for about 2 1/2 weeks and at the end had the big gush with the horrible fishy smell. So embarassing. Anyhow, my first period was bad! It lasted for 11 days. My second period I had and emergency visit to the doctor who did the cryo. He said the scarring isn't covering over fast enough, but could take up to 6 months. He said there's definitely too much bleeding going on. It's a good thing I put a towel on my bed the night before or I'd be buying a new mattress! I bled through a extra super tampon and an overnight pad, and slept in jeans. I'm going for a D and C tomorrow. So, with that, I found this discussion and felt the need to contribute! I'll post back to let everyone know what happens! Thanks everyone for your input!

Update! I went for my D & C yesterday. My gyno told me that he was baffled because I have fibroids now that came up on the ultrasound AFTER the cryo that weren't on the ultrasound BEFORE I had the cryo. He went ahead with the D & C, and I have to see him again in 2 weeks. I'm hoping this will help. Hopefully it will get me through my vacation in FL! I'll keep you updated.
