We all enjoy the heart-warming stories of siblings who are separated at birth and miraculously re-connected with each other as adults. We empathize with the need for adopted individuals to search for their biological parents. Why? Because we have an innate need to know who we are, where we came from, and who we are connected to.

For the majority of us, our identity is not a gnawing issue. We are surrounded by our parents, siblings and extended families. We are comfortable, sometimes too comfortable, with the personal, cultural and religious labels that our parents bestow on us, and we live our lives believing that we know who we are.

But do we?
