Remedy for gout

By April 3, 2012 - 8:00pm

Hello, I had my first gout attack in January, 2011. I diagnosed myself. I found this website www.gout-aware.com which gave me all the information I needed to: diagnose and treat myself. After being diagnosed and treated with prescription medications at the ER because I could not walk, I sought a registered dietitian so that I could lose weight (I was 224 lbs) and know what food I could eat. She basically didn't know what foods I needed to stay away from but gave me a 1600 cal diet and gave me sample meals for 3 meals a day. I kept reading online information and bought books on acidity and alkalinity of foods, which was very helpful. Basically, you need to eat fruits and vegetables (which are alkaline) with each meal (counteracting the acidity of: meats/proteins and breads/starches) to help you be more alkaline. I started drinking 2 liters of water each and every day. I make sure I drink 1 liter before noon and then the other liter the rest of the day. I took the Bragg apple cider vineger (1 TB Bragg apple cider vinegar in 1TB of water) twice a day after meals--however, at times I would forget or not be home or be lazy and it wouldn't always work for me. Then someone told me to take: 2TB Bragg apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water in the a.m. when I woke up--before eating or drinking anything else. This was the key to my success! In less than 1 yr I lowered my cholesterol level from 250 to 193. I lost 14 lbs. I was told to exercise 1 hr a day in Jan, 2011. I laughed because I didn't even exercise at all. Now, I am exercising 6 days a week 40 minutes and sometimes up to an hour. I barter with a trainer (I do massage for her and she trains me--hour for hour). I don't drink alcohol, stopped eating shellfish, and rarely have beef. I will eat pork, salmon/grouper/talapia, chicken, turkey, dairy foods, and nuts for my protein. My other dilemma was kidney stones of oxylase consistency. This was challenging because what was good for gout was bad for kidney stones. The dietitian told me not to stress over the foods and to eat them in moderation. For instance, nuts are bad for kidney stones--so don't eat them too often. Limit the days to maybe twice a week.

I have recently had my first diagnosed acute attack of gout and have had a second attack in the last week..I am finding it quite overwhelming as in my case it is not food related but is caused by huge doses of fluid tablets and kidney disease. My normal diet is almost the gout diet so food is not the issue for me...I have three potential extremely serious medical conditions and it seems like treatment for one adversely affects one of the others so controlling the gout is proving difficult...I am taking colgout but the side effects of this medication make it really not worth taking . The gout is in both feet ..left knee and both hands and wrists...I have lived with pain for the last 3 years but nothing compares with the pain associated with an acute gout attack...I am allergic to all pain killers except panadol and anti-inflammatories are not an option due to interaction with other medication etc. I used ice pacs and have found a dose of prednisolone will relieve the pain quickly..The disadvantage of the cortosone (prednisolone) is that you cant just take one big dose, once taken it then has to be cut down over the next two days till it can be stopped...It is worth the drama as for me it is the only thing that will stop the pain quickly but I use it only as a last resort as this drug has unwanted side effects too. I take cherry extract and have found this helpful..I plan to try the apple cider vinegar to see if that helps as well and I'm seriously look into finding a natural diuretic to take over from the fluid tablets..Had hoped to be able to take cranberry juice but it interacts with the warferin I have to take so need to find an alternative..Would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions.. While I have to take the fluid tablets my ability to get control of the gout seems to be almost impossible as it causes really high Uric Acid levels.
For all of you out there who suffer from this disease my heart goes out to you..So many people do not understand this disease and it seems to be brushed under the rug as something that effects eaters of rich food who drink in excess..We know first hand that this is not the case...this disease is life altering..
Best Wishes
