So, at last, the Prime Minister of India has denounced the fact that there are so many fewer girls than boys (927 girls for every 1,000 boys) in his country....
This public denouncement comes after an estimated 10 million girl fetuses were aborted over the past 20 years by families who wanted male heirs.
I'd say this is a major case of too little, too late. What do you think?

Doctors and parents in India get around this law in many creative ways.... some doctors have been known to leave candy wrapped in either blue or pink by the door so the couple leaving from their sonogram will know what they're having. Or, the doctor will make a comment during the sonogram, like "this one will be a fighter."

Yeah, it's true that it's a step in the right direction, but what's so sad is that nothing is really being done on a legislative level to end this tragedy. So far, it's just words coming from the Prime Minister, but no real action.... yet....
We all need to keep a close eye on this issue.

I agree that it is too little too late as well, although I think it is a step in the right direction. The message coming from the Prime Minister is that girls need to be valued as much as boys. Unfortunately, culturally, many parents consider girls a burden as young women when they marry need to have dowries, which some say strap the parents financially.
April 30, 2008 - 5:40amTwenty years is a very long time to let something so shameful go on, but without someone speaking up, it could go on for another 20.
