Unwanted Pregnancy Scare

I have been sexually active for 3 weeks (starting January 16, 2015). I've been on the birth control pill for over a year and every time I have sex, my boyfriend uses a condom. I take my pill every morning and to our knowledge, there has never been an instance of the condom tearing/falling off etc. I was supposed to get my period last week (around January 27) but I am now approximately a week late. I've taken two pregnancy tests (First Response) and both have been negative. However, I'm concerned that I've taken them too early and am possibly getting false negatives. I have slight pregnancy symptoms (no period, slight cramping and slight nausea- but nothing extreme at all.) I'm only 22, still in college and scared out of my mind that I may be pregnant. Any advice, tips or words of comfort?

Hi Kristin-

Original poster here. Thanks for your help before. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely out of the woods it seems. I took two more tests on February 5 and February 18 and both were negative. I started my placebo pills on Sunday and typically start my period Mondays or Tuesdays (i.e. today or tomorrow). This morning, I felt exactly as I do whenever I start my period, went to the bathroom and saw that I had started my period (red blood, normal flow etc.) However, I noticed about an hour later that my flow had completely stopped and I occasionally get a very light red/brown substance when I wipe. My breasts and particularly my nipples are a bit sore but absolutely no other symptoms than that. Should this be worrisome or is it possible it's all just premenstrual symptoms?

Dear Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question and visiting the EmpowHER community.

I know it can be frightening. You have done everything right to try and prevent an unwanted pregnancy. You are probably not pregnant-you are on the pill and taking it correctly, using condoms and two tests came back negative.

I would take another test on the 13th and if that comes back negative then you are fine. You can always go to the health center at your college and they can draw blood for a more accurate test.

To ease your mind, your period is probably just late which is normal. Try not to stress about it, I know it's easier said than done.

Keep me updated and let me know if your period comes.

Best,

Kristin
