Constant Brown Spotting

I have had brown spotting for about 5 years now, but I have a normal period every month. For about a week after my period I have no spotting, but after that I have constant brown spotting until my next period. I have told my doctor about this and he doesn't really even acknowledge it. I was going to the health clinic when I first started experiencing this and they would keep changing my birth control pills to see if it helped and it didn't. I have gone off the pill for years and that didn't help either. Also just thought that I would mention that I get a lot of headaches, I am tired a lot and I have a lowe sex drive in case it could be connected.

I had spotting for five years, it has lessened now that I take thyroid medication. Oddly, when it first started they tested my thyroid levels and they were fine. They are still fine but I have Hashimoto's thyroid disease which is somewhat common. It is diagnosed through a special blood test which looks for antibodies.

Have you girls been checked for adenomyosis?
Especially those who has been thru C section, myomectomy, n d&c?
Adenomyosis is a condition where the barrier between the endometrium n the myometrium is "torn" due to surgery. Therefore the blood menses , instead of coming out downwards , goes into the myometrium, n gets trapped there. So, as time goes by, more n more blood start to get trapped in the myometrium, resulting in an enlarged womb. And when the uterus contracts, some old blood might be expelled out, resulting in spotting or bleeding brown, dark brown,or even black(depending how old the blood is).
I've been experiencing this brown spotting, sometimes could be a little heavy, after say 1 week after menses, n it just prolongs.
My pap smear, CA125 is normal.
I underwent 2 myomectomies, for fibroids.

So, girls, before the spotting starts, do you feel your uterus contracts or feels heavier?

My doctor phoned me today to put my mind at rest before I see him mid next week. He said my hormone results were normal but was concerned by the u/s report indicating the irregularity of my uterus lining. He seems to think it might be retained tissue left over from my last pregnancy... He is going to speak to a gyno (not the one that preformed my last D&C) and see what he has to say about it all. Hopefully I'll have a better understanding of what's going on next week.

Hi Jo73,

I too have endometriosis and have continual brown discharge all throughout the month. My GP, GYN, and RE all don't think it's a problem. No one has mentioned anything about my linning but I was wondering if you have heard back from your doctor about your linning and if that could have been the cause of the brown discharge?

Thanks very much,
Dreams

Hi Ji- Thanks for the update. It helps to have answers, and I hope the call did ease your mind, but I guess it may also have brought some new concerns. Please keep us posted, and we wish you all the best. Pat

I too have the same problem... a week long period, nothing for the following week and then the spotting starts and continues till I get my next period (basically 3 weeks of bleeding/spotting out of the month). Unlike many others who have posted about this problem, I've only had it the last couple of months.

My problems started after I miscarried and had a D&C in October. I've had severe bloating every cycle since (I look 5 mths pregnant and can only wear maternity clothes a week prior to my period) and then this mid cycle spotting started two cycles ago. I usually have a very regular 27 day cycle and a period that lasts 5 days with no mid cycle spotting EVER! So I'm really concerned this has started happening... I do suffer from endometriosis but have never had these symptoms since discovering I had the disease 8 years ago.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound today and some blood taken to check my hormones. I asked the sonographer if she could see anything suspect, but all she told me was the lining of my uterus was thick and had fluid in it (everything else looked normal). I'll find out more in 5 days time when I see my GP again. I'm hoping he can diagnose this problem so I can go back to being my normal self again and hopefully help others that might have the same thing.

Anon - There's a lot of information on the causes of midcycle bleeding in the following article. http://www.gynaeonline.com/ovulation_bleeding.htm

Thanks Pat but my spotting is most definitely not "midcycle" spotting!
My brown discharge episodes happen on any days of the month. Last month after my usual period of Days 1 to 5, I had brown spotting on Days 9, 10, and then Day 15 right thru to my next cycle. Spotting for over 10 days constantly.

Hey, I have had the exact same problem as well! It has been about four years of constant spotting. It started as 1 week then turned in to 2 now a days i don't have a day without spotting. I have been on birth control since it started. I can't remember exactly when it started but once it did all my Doctor did was switch my Birth Control Pills. I have probably been on 3 or 4 different pills before he recommended I see a gyno. The gyno switched my to another pill then finally suggested I get an IUD. That helped a little but then it just went back to ! week period, I week nothing then 2 weeks spotting, or brown discharge. After about 6 months on the IUD it started getting worse and my gyno suggested I try going off birth control to see if it goes back to how it was before I went on it in the first place which was normal! I have now been off BC for 3 months and it is the worst it has ever been! In the three months i think i have had 6 days of no spotting or period. I have had all the test done and the only thing is low iron and one other low number on some sort of something to do with a blood disorders but he said he was going to refer my to a hematologist but that was 3 months ago and haven't heard anything since!
Please Help!!!
I can't stand it any more
Thanks
