Q:

Can IUDs cause heart palpatations or arrythmia?

I had an IUD inserted a few years ago after having my second child. Shortly after, I began having irregular heartbeat and was eventually diagnosed with SVT. After two heart surgeries and nearly two years of medications, I still had the palpatations. However, after having my IUD removed, I noticed the palpatations stopped. I know this may sound crazy, but can IUDs cause heart problems? Have other women had this experience?

OMG. I got the Mirena IUD one year ago for heavy perimenopausal bleeding. Bleeding continued for a while. But within a month my heart started racing, palputations and the doctor said I had a heart murmur. At 55 I'm just now diagnosised with it? I am furious after reading what you all have written. I never made the connection. I am going to have it removed and hope for the best with the bleeding.

I got my Mirena IUD 27 days ago for heavy perimenopausal bleending. Already I am suffering from itchy skin, heart palpitations, nervousness, insomnia and night sweats. My cervix has a constant stinging pain. My doctor will not remove it and insists I leave it 3 months to "settle in". I am desperate to the point of doctor shopping and lying about the length of time I have had it in, just so they will remove it before I go insane or have a heart attack.

Others have had their doctors respond by refusing to take it out. Go to Planned Parenthood. They will remove it for you. No judgement. I can't believe how much better I feel. Absolutely NO palpitations - and no anxiety.

YES! I have had irregular heart beats for FIVE YEARS and even ended up in the ER twice because I thought I was having a heart attack. "It's anxiety...." I was told. Has Mirena taken out yesterday....YESTERDAY, I SAY! And I feel better today 100%. No pressure on my heart, no palps. Craziness.

I've had mirena in for 6 months and haven't felt 100% since. 2 months ago I started waking up with night sweats that lasted for 3 weeks straight. I went to the ER and they couldn't find any reason for it. Too young for menopause they said at 39. Four mornings ago I woke up with my heart racing and an irregular heartbeat. I called the paramedics and i was in atrial fibrillation! Lasted 12 hours!!! First time ever! I was admitted into the hospital. I've always had heart palps before my cycle and during stress but never has this happened before. They found nothing wrong with my heart, no damage, no disease. Then I remembered the mirena. It's a foreign object and it does have side effects. I'm going tomorrow to have it taken out. I'm glad i found this post. The cons outweigh the pros for this implant. I want my healthy life back. If this could be the cause of my discomfort, it's the first thing i'm doing to help it. Thanks for the posts girls!!

No, they have not stopped. I get them every day still. I'm on beta blockers, aspirin, and was on xanax and just switched to clonazepam yesterday. Wearing a heart event recording monitor for 2 weeks now to see what's going on with my palpataions or how manytimes in go into afib. I had a sleep study done as well and it came back normal but i had afib during the first 80 minutes of the study and i didn't even know it!! Hopefully the clonazepam controls the palpatations more.

I didn't realize I was still getting email notices from this conversation. Hopefully the person above will respond as well. When I got mine out at the end of last summer, I had one more set of heart palps that lasted for over a week - I am assuming as I came down off the Mirena. I have been completely healthy and happy now for four months.
