Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
First of all, having high-risk HPV is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. Most sexually active people get HPV at some point in their lives. Since the virus can remain dormant for years and cause no symptoms, it is near impossible to trace when, or from whom you received the infection.
Most of the time, the infection resolves itself within 8 to 13 months.
Having "high-risk" HPV means that it could potentially cause cancer. The most common cancer it can cause is cervical cancer. If high-risk HPV does not go away on its own, abnormal cells can develop. This is why having regular check ups is so important, because the abnormal cell growth needs to be detected and treated as soon as possible.
In order to keep from possibly spreading it, be sure to abstain from skin-to-skin contact. Using a condom can easily remedy that issue.
Whether you tell your ex-boyfriend or not is of course, entirely your decision. However, I would advise you not to tell him because there is currently no testing for HPV in men. So, it would probably cause more stress for him than necessary.
Below I've pasted a link you should check out that contain important facts about HPV.
