School is already stressful enough but with chronic pain it can be even more stressful. Long hours are spent on campus walking around, hitting the books in the library, sitting through long lectures, and not getting enough sleep.

Most chronic pain sufferers wake up in pain and sit in their pain all day unless they are being treated with medication that actually helps alleviate their symptoms. The cycle repeats itself every day with no days off. Fatigue kicks in because when our bodies are in pain it must use extra energy.

When the body experiences pain it can be hard to focus and get work done. The couch at home is calling our name but we can’t skip class!

The good news is that finishing college is possible for chronic pain sufferers however it requires a little more effort than the average student. Use these tips to help you succeed and follow your dreams.

1 On the first day of class let your professor know about your condition. Lots of professors understand and are accommodating if you are upfront with them and let them know BEFORE hand. Don’t come to them after the fact, they hate that.
2 Bring medications to school. This might be obvious but you don’t want to be stuck on campus without them or have to run home during a break. You never know when your body will decide to betray you.
3 Get extra sleep. Go to bed earlier than normal to make sure your body is getting the rest it needs.
4 Get assignments done early. Do not procrastinate! If your body goes into a bad flare, at least you know your assignments are completed and it helps take the stress off.
5 Get phone numbers and emails of other classmates. If you have to miss a class, reach out to them and ask if you missed any important announcements or assignments. Make sure you return the favor and help them out when they miss a class as well.
6 Carry peppermint oil in your backpack. Peppermint oil acts as a natural pain reliever when applied to the body. It can help body aches and can be a little treat for your body.
7 Wear lose fitting clothes. Tight fitting clothes can make you even more uncomfortable! Don’t worry, you will blend in with the other college students who wear leggings, UGG boots, and an oversized sweater. Comfortable walking shoes is also important.
