Cupping

So, I went to my acupuncturist the other day. Besides my regular acupuncture treatment, he decided to give me my first cupping treatment. I have a bad shoulder & he thought that my muscles needed to be loosened up before even a massage would even really do me any good. It was really painful, but my back feels so much better!

What you didn't learn in Geography class: Your odds of surviving cancer may depend on where you live

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you may want to check your surroundings, because apparently where you live has an effect on your chances of survival.

It's fairly well known that poorer people and minorities have a lower survival rate of diseases like cancer due to lack of health care and at times, a lack of awareness of a good health care regime. A late diagnosis is especially to blame. I think we all know someone who is hesitant to see a doctor due to costs and waits until his or her symptoms are serious before getting care.

Healthcare and Blogher

So, today, I'm at the Blogher conference in San Francisco, and for those who aren't familiar, it's a conference for women interested in blogging or essentially writing a journal online as we also encourage at EmpowHer.com through our SHARE feature.

While the conference topics range, I've already met a few women with wonderful backgrounds in the world of health including a very young woman who helps build data visualization software (which she thinks has a wonderful healthcare application) and someone who believes in healing through a combination of traditional care and spirituality.

LONDON - Some doctors have long suspected that if the plaque that builds up in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease could be removed, they could be saved. But a new vaccine that did just that suggests the theory is wrong.

Recently, I had a family member consult me regarding the prescription of medication for her son who has been diagnosed with a "mild form of ADD". The physcian recommended that he be given a low dose of medication to treat his symptoms. Immediately her mother's intuition sparked and she felt that this may not be the best course of action, however, she didn't know what her options were.

Radioactive Ingredient in Cigarettes?!

We've all heard about the dangerous chemicals and fillers added to cigarettes and other tobacco products, and I just read that there is another substance that is naturally occurring in tobacco and tobacco smoke, and this substance is radioactive!

Polonium-210 is in cigarettes, and the major tobacco manufacturers have attempted (but failed) to remove this radioactive substance from their tobacco products. This substance's existence is being minimized by the sellers and manufacturers.

It's hard to separate emotions from the body and what's more important is that you communicate what you're feeling with your doctor if you're feeling ill. According to familydoctor.org, this is known as the mind/body connection. Here are a few symptoms that may be tied to emotions:

* Back pain
* Change in appetite
* Chest pain
* Constipation or diarrhea
* Dry mouth
* Extreme tiredness
* General aches and pains
* Headaches
* High blood pressure
* Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
* Lightheadedness
