Gold medal moms

08-08-08 is the magic date: when the Beijing Summer Olympics begins. There will be some gold medal moms headed that way, moms who have proven that they can have their families and still compete as elite athletes. They were probably watching Joan Benoit Samuelson, who just ran her last Boston Marathon and Olympic trials - at the age of 50! These Olympians, these moms, are incredible, and they're still pursuing their dreams with kids in tow.

Someone at work today said that he is trying to be an "enabler" to his children, teaching them that they should follow their dreams, not the money, and be happy in life. As a mom, I practiced that philosophy with my own children, and they are pursuing their dreams, while their friends are complaining about being caught in dead-end jobs. It's not always easy.

And this brings me to my point: a happy mom makes a happy family. Mom (even the one who is a "mister") is the true heart of the family. If you're not a healthy mom, it's hard to be happy; and, if you're not happy, no one is.

So, take care of yourselves. Be "enablers" to your children. Have a Happy Mother's Day.
