Medical Director of the Seattle STD/HIV Prevention and Training Center, Dr. Marrazzo discusses the most common & most beneficial protections against chlamydia.

Dr. Marrazzo:
There are really two ways to not have problems from chlamydia. The first one is do not get it in the first place, and know that condoms are a really great way to protect yourself from getting infected. Obviously, you can't always get your male partners to use condoms but if you can, that is a great way to do it. The other main thing is to have it detected or found if you do get infected early enough so that it does not go on to cause some of the problems I mentioned earlier. That means that you need to get tested routinely. The recommendations are if you are 25 years or younger and you have sex of any kind, you should be tested at least annually. It is really very much like a Pap smear. You probably want to get tested more frequently if you have more than one sex partner, or you develop symptoms, or there are other concerns that you have about possibly having been exposed to an STD.
