The professor of the Clinical Dermatology Department at UCSF, School of Medicine, Dr. Berger sheds light on women's diet & acne.
Dr. Tim Berger: There have been up to very recently a belief that acne was really unrelated to diet, but now with the appearance of the metabolic syndrome in such a large number of patients in United States, people are realizing that these high insulin levels that are caused by their typical American diet, which is loaded with sugars and carbohydrates may actually cause insulin resistance that those elevated levels of insulin may actually elevate male hormones and reduce the protein to which they bind in the blood meaning there is more available male hormone and that they makes more oil and maybe contributing to acne in the subset of patients.
