I work part time as a Certified Nursing Assistant while I put myself through nursing school at Arizona State University. I will be graduating in May with my Bachelors in Science and Nursing. I plan to work for a couple of years and then go to medical school.
My grandparents were married for 62 years and were like parents to me. I was very close to them. Three years ago my grandmother passed away on a Thursday morning and I spent the following two nights sleeping next to my grandfather in bed. Until the moment he went into cardiac arrest while laying next to me, I had never advocated for anyone’s health before. For answers I had no place to turn; accept the internet.
I’ve got mostly women in my life. My work is dedicated to them and all the other women who keep us health, happy and alive.
I enjoy reading about health, and how other women have dealt with any conditions they may have. The topic of natural medicine (vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc.), is especially fascinating to me. I have had migraines since I was a teenager and am also dealing with a jaw issue that is similar to TMJ. I think the idea of sharing our stories is fantastic!
On Monday, February 11, 2008 I was diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia. My endocrinologist told me it is a major metabolic disorder I have had since childhood. Luckily it is a more milder form, or I would have possibly died by this point. This is after 24 years of going from Dr to Dr and having my symptoms dismissed, and being told that things are because I am fat. Finding out I am fat because of the disease was almost a relief. I am still adjusting to a life where everyone around me needs to be aware of what I got, and if I miss even one of those tiny little steroid pills I will get very sick.
I am a clinical educator, health coach, certified tobacco treatment specialist, and certified asthma educator. I am the Wellness Program Director at Monarch Health Promotions in Tucson, Az.
I have had migraines since I was 5 years old. My first one was as the flower girl for my Uncle's wedding. I never made it down the isle. I remember my Mother scooping me up and running me to the restroom; basically to stop me from throwing up in the isle of the church!
I am 38 now and have had a migraine every day for the past 4 months. So, began my quest to resolve it. My doctor and I ran blood tests looking for hormone problems, we did an MRI, we did Topamax as a daily medication to eliminate/reduce the number of migraines I had. None of these things helped.
I started my own quest on the interet. Now, I knew there were some foods that were triggers, hotdogs, MSG, cheese...but when I found a "master check list" of foods on www.migraines.org I had NO IDEA the foods that were "possible triggers".
I am a very picky eater - and on this list of foods was 95% of the foods I do eat! No wonder I had migraines every day...I was "feeding" them!! Since that discovery (and the discovery that my Triglycerides were too high) I have resorted to eating baby carrots, apple slices, boneless, skinless chicken breasts - bbq'd, and wheat thins as a snack. I have not "eliminated" my migraines, but I have gone 4-5 days without one! That is a great start! Not to mention, I have lost 10 pounds!!
I have kept this "diet" up for 3 or 4 weeks now - and I didn't have the REALLY BAD ones that I would get around my period, this cycle. I will keep this up, monitor it over the next month or two, and see if I am really keeping the migraines at bay...or just fooling myself!
