I read recently that one of the main reasons people hire a personal trainer is accountability. They have to be there on a certain day, at a certain time, and put the work in!

I hired a personal trainer nearly a year ago. I wasn't overweight but I was out of shape. Three back-to-back pregnancies will do that to you.

I booked him for 20 sessions and could barely walk the day after Session 1. I was in so much pain I came down the stairs on my hands and knees - backwards! And it took at least a minute, rather than the usual 10 seconds.

But all it took was a few more session to stop feeling the pain and start seeing results. I got my legs back! I didn't lose a lot of weight because I was converting fat to muscle but I dropped a dress size and felt great.

I also swore I'd join the gym instead of just going there to see my trainer.

That part I reneged on. As much as I liked the results, I so despised working out with machines! I just hated it. It's also pricey and the training sessions were an expensive once off I felt I owed myself.

So instead I walk - a fast, rapid walk, even in the freezing air. When I walk in the morning, I can feel my metabolism thumping all day! It keeps me toned and is a great cardio workout. Oh and it's free!

I'm not one for a gym but I found out that you don't need to be. I would highly recommend a personal trainer to ensure accountability, to teach you how to exercise correctly for your age, your sex and your body. And it's also a great kick-start to managing your own exercise regime. Now that I've learned these things, I can go ahead on my own and make it a part of my lifestyle.
