Have You Changed Your Eating Habits Given the Recent Salmonella Scare?

ASKED by Tina T on July 5, 2008 - 9:14pm

The news that more people have become sick with salmonella gave me pause. I honestly haven't changed my eating habits since word of the outbreak well ... broke. I'm not avoiding tomatoes or other produce and am relying on grocery stores and other distributors to take precautions. I have been washing our fruits, vegetables and herbs more, but haven't skipped my favorite foods. How are you handling the news? Have you done an about face as far as your eating habits are concerned?

I have not eaten any tomatoes since the salmonella cases began to be reported, but once I saw the headline: "...tomatoes may not be the only source of salmonella...", I began to lighten up and bought a few from the store.

It's difficult to be a "good consumer of health" and listen pro-actively to the news, at the same time, not REACT to the news and change our lifestyle drastically. There are many ways that our food supply can become contaminated; in fact, I created a problem in our own home last month. We just moved into a new house, and I didn't look at the refrigerator's setting. Our milk kept spoiling, and a few times I did not realize it until after it was consumed and I had a stomach ache and began a search to find the culprit. The interesting thing: my toddler would not drink his milk (strange for him), which was a clue that there was something wrong with him or the milk. I turned down the temp. of the refrigerator, and now our milk is fine (also, I had stored it in the door of the 'fridge...a big "no no"!).

Anyways, I try to do my best: buy organic when feasible, wash our produce, be careful with food safety precautions when cooking and storing meat and dairy...the salmonella outbreak helps me to remember to do this more diligently. It can quickly become overwhelming if we react to everything we hear on the news!

Not sure if I would eat a raw tomato at this point, however....

I have only eaten cooked tomatoes, and even then I am wary. I have had stomach issues recently, and I hope there is no correlation!
