Sex and the City: Progressive or Unhealthy?
Okay, sorry to jump on the bandwagon here, but I am so curious!
I went to the movies today with my mom (it is her birthday!), and there was the longest line I had ever seen for the Sex and the City movie! The audience was primarily young women.
I have seen the TV shows, and do find them entertaining, sometimes even thought-provoking. I became disappointed when the focus narrowed to what they are wearing and what club they are getting into, rather than the relationships themselves (but, I "get" that as part of the show).
What I don't "get" is is all the media hype, and it does seem to be more about the fashion and less about the women's relationships and the IDEA that WOMEN can TALK about SEX..it is no longer "forbidden"! I am all for that, but now I am questioning the motives behind this movie and the movie goers. Am I reading too much into this...is it just a movie?!
I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie, whether you've seen it or not, and what do you think about these types of movies...has society advanced with the notion of women being free to talk (and have) sex, or is it an unhealthy portrayal of intimate sexual relationships?

I just saw the Sex in the City movie this afternoon with my daughter and we LOVED it. My daughter is 13 and the movie was "R" rated but we still loved it. It was a wonderful escape movie with amazing clothes but the best part was at it's core it was about 4 female friends who had a close relationship which has lasted over the years. This is the most important part of this continuing story; women having a few close friends to share life with. I hope this movie helps women continue to embrace their friendships with their girl friends no matter if they are married or not. I have 3 close female friends who I cherish our continued relationship with: Carolyn, Courtney, and Kim. Women need to seek and convent these vital relationships and the Sex in the City movie just reinforces this message. To my beloved gang of four moms as I call them, thanks for always being there for me over the last 13 years.
I was a little bummed by the reviews (I haven't seen it yet), so I'm glad to hear that it's worth seeing. I'm hoping to go tomorrow.

What I am reading is that buzz around SATC has made a big impression on the movie industry. The success of SATC has shown that a movie for women can be a summer blockbuster. That means that more "chick flicks" will be produced which is OK for me. In that genre, there is ample chance for movies with sensitivity and deep characterization. That's a nice break from the special effects, action genre dominating screens these days.
