The Sinister Side of Sunshine -- What To Watch Out For When Examining Your Skin
With summer around the corner, it’s a good time to remind ourselves of the precautions we need to take to protect our skin in the sun. And while we follow the tried-and-true when it comes to skin protection – limiting our time in the sun, using sunblock, avoiding tanning, and wearing hats, sunglasses and other protective clothing -– there may be something we don’t know when it comes to the more sinister side of the sun.
In addition to the steps above, it’s important to check our skin once a month, keeping an eye on moles, birthmarks or other parts of the skin. Here's what you need to be on the lookout for:
A = asymmetry (one half of the growth looks different from the other half)
B = borders that are irregular
C = color changes or more than one color
D = diameter greater than the size of a pencil eraser
E = evolving, meaning changes in size, shape, symptoms (itching, tenderness), surface (especially bleeding), or shades of color

This is a great reminder -- especially at this time of the year!!
I just got back from a vacation in Kennebunkport, Maine, where I spent an afternoon on the beach with my daughter. I was so good .... smothered both of us in sunscreen, wore a SPF protective shirt, wore sunglasses to protect my eyes, etc. Then the next morning discovered that I was sunburned like a Maine lobster on my scalp, where I part my hair. I forgot my hat!
We can never be too careful. (And, yes, we always need to check our scalps too!)
