What has been your experience with Lasik Surgery?

ASKED by Veronica on April 26, 2008 - 1:11pm

With so much negative publicity in the media right now, Lasik surgery is not looking like it's the greatest option. There are numerous people coming forth to talk about their negative, even harmful, experience with this surgery. However...millions of people have elected to have laser eye surgery done, and it has been successful and they are extremely happy.

Have you had laser eye surgery done? What were your experiences during and after the surgery?

Hi Veronica,

This is an interesting topic. I have not had lasik surgery because I've been told that I am not a cadidate. I would love nothing better then to get my eyes fixed. Since I started EmpowHer. My eyes have gotten far worse. I can no longer read without glasses. I hate that. But, that's just the way it is.

Any surgery has inherent risk factors. You've got to do your homework. You always want the doctor to be board certified in his field. There are web sites where you can go to find out if he or she, is in good standing with the state medical board. You can actually see if they have complaints against them. I'll have to have one of our moderators get more information up on how to find that on line.

Remember, your body doesn't know whether it's been hit by a train or has had lasik surgery. It' only knows it's had a procedure or trauma. Be careful. You have to weight out the pro's and con's. You want to know how many surgery's he or she has done. What's the success rate and how many have failed or have had complications. They have to give you this information if you ask for it.

My husband had the lenses put in...forget the name of the procedure. It's fairly new or was newer, when he had it done. He was apprehensive at first and so was I. I wanted there to be a lot more people having the procedure before he did. You never want to be the first one to the table. They will tweak and perfect the procedure if you can just wait it out. I must say, he loves it. I did a lot of homework on this surgeon, before I'd let him even consider doing it.

I'm sure there are many women who have had this procedure and would be willing to share if it worked for them.

Lets ask....

Has anyone in the community, had lasik's surgery? It would be so helpful to all of the women who are considering it but want to hear about others experiences.
Where did you go for your procedure?

What area do you live in?

How did you find the doctor that did your procedure?

Best in health,

Michelle

I had Lasik over 10 years ago. It was one of the best gifts I've ever given myself. As a matter of fact, I had it done on the day of the last Seinfeld episode!

I remember leaving the doctor's office and when I got in the car I was so excited about being able to read the street signs! I went home and slept which is what they want you to do. BUT I had to make sure I was up to watch that last Seinfeld episode!!! I had the funky plastic shields over my eyes but I could still see!

The next day I actually worked in the office for a few hours until my eyes got tired. Then I slept some more.

The third day I spent about 6 hours planting flowers in my yard. After that it was business as usual. For a few weeks my eyes would get tired and so I'd rest them.

So it's been over 10 years and I still have 20/20 vision. I'm 54 and need reading glasses, but that's an age thing and not related to my nearsightedness that I had lasik for.
