Timothy Berger, MD professor of Clinical Dermatology Department of Dermatology clarifies the dos and don’ts for adult acne.

Dr. Tim Berger: In the beginning, I talk to the patients about basic skin treatment because in fact, that can certainly exacerbate acne and then we go through the medicines and discuss diet and those things then I will take a hormonal history and go through that and discuss why I believe that in many of the women who are post-adolescent and still have acne, their hormones play a role.

During that time, the patients often have questions then about specific moisturizers; specific regimens that they use and we discussed that. I often on the second there is where I will have the patient actually bring in everything that they use and sort of go through that.

So, that is sort of how I begin that’s sort of how I begin to the visit where we have emphasis in the initial encounter and then depending on the severity of the acne, dermatologist grade acne from grade 1 to grade 4. I will say, you know, for your grade of acne, we are going to need to start with this type of treatment.
