Anger Management for Children

Every time there's another news report about a child shooting another, a teen gunman's rampage at a school, or a child deliberately harming another out of rage, it makes me wonder what made these kids so mad at the world and what did their parents know - or deny - about their anger. What concerns me most is that, these days, angry behavior seems to go unchecked because authority figures, particularly in schools, and even parents, are restricted by law or threat of lawsuit in what corrective actions might be taken.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Has anyone any experience with this? For us more northern folks, SAD (also known as Winter Depression) can be a battle we face every year. Those of us who go through 6 months of severe winter weather can become depressed due to the cold, darkness, lack of outdoor activity and human connection that this weather causes. Much of the cause is related to light (or lack of) and sufferers use light therapy to cope. But some people are actually hospitalized for this or even commit suicide. And it can lead to worsening depression like bi-polar disorder.

Here's a thought coming to us courtesy of English researchers and the BBC -- depression may be good for you. In an article published this week -- a leading psychiatrist says "that depression is not a human defect at all, but a defence mechanism that in its mild and moderate forms can force a healthy reassessment of personal circumstances."
