One in three women in the U.S. will have had a hysterectomy before age 60. Tell us about your experiences and become a resource for other women.

Hysterectomy Help
I just had someone email me today to ask the question if she should have her ovaries removed or not because she needs to have her uterus removed. The doctors have suggested that they remove the ovaries at the same time. You have to weight all of the factors. Why are you having your uterus removed, should be your first question. Then, you need to do your homework from there. In my case, I did not need my ovaries removed but was scared into it. I was told that 20% of women will come back with ovarian cancer after having a partial hysterectomy. Has this happened to any of you? I'd love to know.

Hysterectomy Help
I had a partial and, in agreement with my doctor, left my ovaries in. There are truly many factors to weigh in this decision. For me, it was my age, and the fact that I wanted the option to explore surrogacy down the road (which I did and it resulted in twin boys). But other considerations came into play as well such as the length of time I had been on birth control, family history, etc. You really need to weigh all options and consider what the ex post facto scenarios are as well in terms of HRT etc. Another source of info for this particular topic--and one that I found helpful at the time--is hystersisters.com.
