It's Lupus, Not Laziness

With lupus, you have good days, and not-so-good days. The good days are precious, times when you feel energetic and pain free. The not-so-good days are when you just don't feel like moving, or can't. While my current relapse isn't as overwhelming as past stretches have been, I'm just not as energized as I should be. My eyes are suffering. It's hard to breathe while on even an easy run. Some days, lately more of them, I simply cannot move off the sofa.

When found positive for the breast cancer gene, BRCA, Jessica Queller elected double prophylactic mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer down to about 3%. Her sister, who also tested positive for the gene, followed suit. Their hopes are that this procedure will improve her future plans to raising her own family. Read her remarkable story: http://www.newsweek.com/id/131985?GT1=43... Would you have the courage to do this, or to advise your daughter to do so, if warranted?

The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo

The saying goes,"The silence is deafening." No more. A brave filmmaker, herself a victim of gang rape, wanted to share her story with victims in the Congo (DRC). Little was Lisa Jackson prepared for the horrific stories she would capture on camera. Her independent documentary film, "The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo," aired on HBO just last week and I cannot describe how it made me feel. If ever you find yourself complaining about life, think of these women who are so violently brutalized with impunity that they suffer, or die, from unimaginable internal wounds.

The Way of the Stressed Out Road Warrior

My road warrior husband has had to battle botched reservations, bad weather and epic flight cancellations of late. He has spent 4-5 days of every week out of town over the last 20 years and knows how to work with the multitude of issues facing business travelers. He's as exhausted from the stress of traveling in these troubled times as he is from his schedule. Although not exactly a "Peaceful Warrior," how does he manage?

Are you as focused on your vision as on sex? Scanning through the long list of posts about sex and sexual health, I think not. Yet, our eyes are literally our windows to the world and most of us would rather suffer any other disability than blindness.

Unique Surgery Saves Woman from Rare Cancerous Tumor

What would you do if you were told that your cancer is inoperable? I joke with my husband that, if anything ever happened to me, just shoot me. Of course, I know he wouldn't; but, I'm not sure what I would do if I heard the word "inoperable." In this day and age of advanced surgical technology, when we can create bionic body parts, one would think we could perform medical miracles.

Spring Cleaning: Check Your Medicine Cabinet

Spring is almost here. While "spring cleaning" the rest of your home, take time to check your medicine cabinet for expired remedies, prescriptions and OTC drugs. What should you toss and what should you have on hand in your medicine cabinet. USC Health (University of Southern California) suggests taking inventory of your medicine cabinet, even conducting a "brown bag review" of your prescription medicines with your pharmacist. As my brother-in-law is a respected pharmacist in his area, I'm sure he'd appreciate spreading the word on this topic!

My House Makes Me Sick: Indoor Air Quality Worse Than Outdoors

I thought about this one more time as I sprayed the tub with a bleach-based cleaning agent and took note of all the toxic cleaners I had for various tasks. I live in an area where black mold is a serious threat, so the monthly bleach treatment of wet spaces and the A/C pipes is a must.
