In the last ten years I’ve had surgery eight times on my right ankle. Most of them were ligament reconstructions and finally a complete ankle fusion. Making the decision to fuse my ankle was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make but with the chronic pain, instability, degenerative arthritis and inflammation I agreed. It’s going to be two years this June and although it’s been a very long recovery and endless hours of physical therapy I can say I’m feeling good about it. One of the biggest challenges is finding shoes that help me walk. With an ankle fusion you have no range of motion so I need orthopedic shoes to help me out. I wear a pair of MBTs but would like to find something different that still provides the support I need, any suggestions? I’d love to hear your story and how you are dealing with the ankle fusion -- was it the right decision for you?

I'm gimpy too!
I had ankle fusion surgery Dec 7 2007, so I'm just a little over 4 months post op. So far I've good results. I'm not suffering with as much pain as before the surgery. I'm short on time but I'd love to swap stories with you. I'll get back with you later.

6 weeks post ankle fusion - QUESTIONS?
Hi Mark Kay aka Gimpy : ),
I am 32 yo female who was in a severe car accident in July 07 and underwent 2 unsuccessful surgeries on my ankle. On May 13, 2008, I finally had to have my ankle fused. I am still in a cast (6 weeks post-op), and my doc is saying he will likely keep me casted for 4 more weeks, then the walking boot.
I just had a couple of questions for you, since you had your's done so recently it must be fresh on your mind. First, when did you doctor start physical therapy? Were you still in the walking boot?
Also, do you walk with a limp when barefooted?
Where do you purchase your shoe modifications? My doc tells me my right leg is now 3/4" shorter than my left leg, so will definitely have to have shoe modifications.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you,
Jennifer

Give me some tips
What excercises did anyone do after their ankle fusion and you were starting to put weight on it again?

Pain post fusion
Hi I am 7 weeks post ankle fusion and partially weight baring in an air cast but finding it really painful so have had to continue with crutches. Judging by the date of your posting I am guessing you are around the same stage as me? How have you found it with weight baring.

exercise post ankle fusion
Hi there,
I had my ankle fusion in April '06. I had to push for PT...my surgeon (Dr. Chou at Stanford...excellent physician) didn't want anyone pushing and pulling on my ankle, but finally got her to prescribe it after I was out of the walking cast. Also, after the fusion was complete she removed all the screws which helped with pain enormously. I highly recommend getting in a warm water therapy pool as soon as you can. I did several 6 week sessions one-on-one with a PT...it was just the ticket. Not only did it help with improving my balance, strength, etc. it just made me feel so much better!! I had been immobile for so long following a traumatic car accident in June '05 and getting in the water and taking the weight off the ankle and just being able to move was heavenly. I had several ankle surgeries, etc. finally resulting in fusion of the right ankle in April '06. I am now walking more or less normally, with a somewhat modified gait and slight limp. I ride a bike and swim...my MD says no walking (or hiking) for exercise, just what walking is needed to live my life, as more pressure is now being put on the other smaller joints of the foot as they compensate for the ankle, which in time could lead to further fusions as the cartilage in them is getting more stress than it would normally. I wear Merrell (sp?) shoes and KEEN sandals, both are great as they have rounded heels...I put a Dr. Scholl's gel heel insert under the insole of the affected foot in the Merrells and that helps alot. Going barefoot doesn't work so well as the immobility is more apparent and often there is some pain...it's always easier to walk with shoes. Sometimes my ankle almost feels normal...other times I have pain and slight swelling, not severe but there, which is easily addressed with elevation, ice and a couple of Ibuprofen. Also, I have nerve entrapment in the scar which is slowly getting better with time. I do alot of self massage on it. I went to the Stanford Pain Mngmt. Clinic for awhile to try to deal with it. After a variey of drug therapies which did nothing, they recommended Botox injection into the scar but my insurance wouldn't pay for it and so I just decided to let it be and it is slowly diminishing with time. Anyway, all in all, given that I am lucky to be alive, the fusion is something that I can live with. Good luck to all who are going through this...

Ankle fusion '06/exercise and activity
Hi there,
I had my ankle fusion in April '06. I had to push for PT...my surgeon (Dr. Chou at Stanford...EXCELLENT physician) didn't want anyone pushing and pulling on my ankle, but I finally got her to prescribe it after I was out of the walking boot. Also, after the fusion and I was weight bearing she decided to remove all the hardware which helped enormously. I also had an excellent PT who was very experienced in working with ankle fusions. As for exercise and PT...I highly recommend getting in a warm water therapy pool as soon as you can.
I am now walking more or less normally, with a somewhat modified gait and slight limp (my friends say it's barely noticeable). I do yoga, ride a bike and swim...my doc says no walking (or hiking) for exercise, just what is needed to live my life, as more pressure is now being put on the other smaller joints of the foot as they compensate for the ankle, which in time could lead to further fusions as the cartilage in them is getting more stress than it would normally. I wear Merrell (sp?) shoes and KEEN sandals, both are great as they have rounded heels...I put a Dr. Scholl's gel heel insert under the affected side insole in the Merrells and that helps alot. Sometimes my ankle almost feels normal...other times I have pain and slight swelling, not severe but there, which is easily addressed with elevation, ice and a couple of Ibuprofen.
Also, I have nerve entrapment in the scar (probably from the initial surgeries at the trauma center) which is slowly getting better with time.

Ankle fusions
I was able to start weight bearing in a rocker boot after the doctor had removed cast and x-rayed at 6 weeks post fusion. Probably took another 4 weeks to be weight bearing without the boot and then learning adapt to getting about without aids.
My biggest tip would be to learn to balance on the fused ankle (when the Dr OK's full weight bearing on it). Use wobble/balance boards, standing on one leg in the pool and I found 'body balance' classes helped as the posses / movements were repeditive for each side so I had to balance on each side and stretch both sides of my body the uneveness became apparent as you will be shortter on the fused leg hence uneven in hips and shoulders but if you know about it you can work on it and will leanr to compensate - it doesn' eventually become the new normal for you.

Newbie to Fusion
Ahhhhh....I've found friends in the same wobbly boat! I had my ankle fused last Tues so I'm in the first week of recovery. Prior to the fusion, I had 3 operations to repair cartilage and tendons - nothing worked. Last week, the doctor replaced tendons and fused the ankle. I go back in 6 weeks for a cartilage replacement surgery. Then I'll really be on the road to recovery. So far, the pain has been fairly moderate - thanks to pain meds. I use a knee walker upstairs and a regular walker downstairs (and yes, I go up/down the stairs on my butt). I live alone and have no help but I'm here to say that, with careful planning, I think most things can be managed. It's not easy but life goes on. I'll check back in later with recovery news. Anyone with advice - let me know!!!!

Looking for shoes
I am almost five months post surgery and am ready to find shoes. I have the best gait so far with the MBT however I'm hoping to find some other options. The MBT is very expensive and clunky. I live in a small town so the shoe options are very limited. I'm hoping a trip to some better shoe stores in Seattle will provide some new options. Any ideas?

Shoes....an issue for me too
Hi Diana,
I had my ankle fused June 2006 and have had the same problem you are having. It's bad enough we can't wear heels ever again but our options are limited. I've been wearing MBTs since I had the surgery. And yes they are very expensive and not to attractive. You could have some custom made for you -- currently looking into this option myself. I live in Phoenix and found a company that specializes in orthotics. I can purchase a normal pair of shoes and they can add a rocker bottom to it to help me out with movement. I'm sure the cost will be just as much as a pair of MBT shoes but at least I can pick a shoe style I like. I also found an open toe sandal that has a rocker bottom from Curves (purchased through Avon for $40). Same rocker bottom concept as MBTs and they work great. Nike shocks have also worked well for me during PT and general use.
Hope this helps some! Did you have any success in Seattle? Let me know if you find anything worthwhile. If not, this may be a good opportunity to venture into a new business for us :-)

Help
I had an Ankle Fusion on Jan. 30, 2007. I did very will not much pain. Now five months later, I do physical therapy three days a week. My pain seems to get worse. The doctor said the fusion look great the bones have healed well. I asked him why when I sit down, for just 5 minutes I can barley walk when I stand up? He said he did not have a clue. I am not a baby and have a pretty high pain tolerance I don't understand what is going on I have been working very hard, and I am going crazy. anyone have an answer.

Pain Upon Standing
I too, experience pain and stiffness after sitting, but once I take about 10 steps, the stiffness decreases! I have arthritis below where my ankle was fused now, which was 8 yrs ago, thus my pain. I know I did not have that problem for the first five years after my fusion though, so I guess I'd have your doctor check for arthritis above of below your fusion. Did you have your ankle done the traditional way or arthoscopically (closed). Mine was done closed and it was a very easy surgery with a very fast recovery compared to the "open" way. It is now that I'm having problems with severe pain again from the arthritis and am looking for anyone else who is five or more years out who is also having problems. I don't know if I am unique or normal. I thought my was gone for the rest of my life and now it's back again. It's very discouraging. I also have a friend who is in the same situation but his pain is not arthritis related (they don't know what's causing his).
We've both even briefly thought of amputation when the pain stops us from doing daily things!

I believe you
Hi,
I had my ankle fused June 2006. I had a lot of pain once I started PT and walking on my own. I had the same thing happen to me after sitting no matter the duration of the time --it hurt to stand and apply pressure. I also encountered a sharp shotting pain going up the tibia when I walked. Doctor said the fusion looked great but after taking it one step further (x-rays, etc.) he found a small fracture on the tibia where the rod and tibia joined. (On top of the pain my foot was always stiff after sitting, I had to take it easy the first few steps before I could walk again.) Since we couldn't risk a complete fracture on the tibia the dr had to go in and remove all the hardware. I did have to wait until the year was up before the dr would go in and remove anything. He didn't want to risk further complications by removing hardware to early. So meanwhile I took it easy stopped PT right away and took pain meds to help me deal with the pain.
I feel so much better now and feel like I have my life back. I can walk and stand pain free! I know hard to believe! My foot still gets stiff after sitting to long but that's expected and nothing like before.
My suggestion would be to ask your dr for an MRI and have him take a closer look. You are having pain for a reason and if he can't help you go get a second opinion. It's bad enough dealing with the fusion and I'm sure you had it done to eliminate the pain not increase it.
What does your PT have to say about it?
Hope this helps some and know you're not alone.
Good luck and keep me posted,
Ang

June 18, 2008 Ankle Fusion
I couldn't believe all of the people who have already gone through fusions. I wish I would have read this forum before going through my fusion, since I have never talked to anyone who has had an ankle fusion. I have a million questions.
I missed the last step carrying a basket of laundry down the stairs and landed on the side of my right ankle in 1978. The fracture was mis-diagnosed as a sprain and I was told to get up and start walking on it within 2-3 days. After 3 weeks of agony, I went back to the hospital (a leading Mpls. teaching hospital) and was told it was fractured, but since it had started healing there was no reason to cast it. For the next 18 months, it was totally unreliable and weak. I would frequently turn my ankle when crossing the street, going on stairs, etc. In 1979, I had a ligament reconstruction which solved the problem for over 20 years. Arthritis started settling in and I have been in agony for the better part of 3 years. I don't know why I waited for the fusion except I was afraid of how permanent a fusion is. I had been taking Vicodin daily to manage the pain.
The surgery went well. I had two joints fused. The pain was worse than I thought, but that is under control now. I spent 3 nights in the hospital.
I have my first appointment tomorrow to have my stitches out and have my first 30 day cast put on it. I was sent home after surgery with a temporary cast.
I was diagnosed with parathyroid disease in February (during my pre-op physical), so I am in full-blown osteoporosis. I am 51 years old and a little concerned about the fusion healing right.
Any tips on how to cope would be appreciated. My doctor said I will be non-weight bearing for a minimum of 3 months.

Hang in there...it does get better
Hi Shelajn,
I know what you mean I wish I had a site like this to go to a couple of years ago before I had to make the decision to fuse my ankle. This site is awesome!!
I'm glad your pain is under control, it's rough the first few weeks after surgery. I know 3 months sounds like a long time but it does get easier with time and the pain does go away.
My best advice is to elevate your foot as much a possible (it really does help the swelling & pain) and stay off of it as instructed by your doctor.
Here's a tip you'll find useful...at least I did. My mom made me an apron with different size pockets that came in handy when I needed an extra pair of hands or nobody was around to help me out. If you don't have an apron use a toolbelt they are pretty inexpensive and work just as well.
I us to take my pain meds before my doctor’s appointments, it helped me with pain management during and after the appointment.
I don't have osteoporosis but I was so worried that my fusion wouldn't take either. Always thinking of the what if's...it's hard not to. So I hope/pray that your x-rays show that everything is healing well.
I hope this helps you some. The good thing is you are not alone and you have a community here at EmpowHer to help you through this!
How are you doing with the crutches?
Please let me know how your appointment goes tomorrow. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

wow this is amazin
I broke my right ankle 4 years ago. after the first surgery I developed plantar fasc. and couldn't put my foot flat on the ground. It took 2 more surgeries and lots of therapy to start walking again. After about 2 yrs I developed arthritis and dealt with it for a long time. I finally had my ankle fusion in April. As of yesterday, I just started with the weight-bearing with assistance with my crutches. I am very weary of how long it will take me to get back to full weight-bearing. I also am very worried about footwear.. I am a great fan of flip flops and other other open-backed shoes. I guess those won't work anymore huh? any words of encouragement?
Posted: Wed., July 2, 2008, 06:58 pm
flip flops are okay after your ankle fusion
Hi!
It's been 2 years since my ankle fusion and I can wear flip flops but they have to be flat and not all the time. I can't wear anything with a heel but that seems like a small price to pay now. Open-backed shoes are a little harder for me to walk in but not impossible. Just don't be surprised if you're walking and it flies off :-) I also noticed that when I wear open-backed shoes my big toe gets a workout and hurts. You'll know what I mean when you try it.
So far the best shoes I've been able to use that provide support and make it easier to walk are MBTs -- check them out
http://www.swissmasaius.com/. Not the best looking shoes but they do the job. After you get us to them you won't even walk with a limp!! I tend to walk with a limp with any other type of shoe, which makes sense since they don't support the heel to toe movement that we need.
Don't be weary just take your time, it will let you know how much weight it can handle. You'll be surprised how soon you'll be walking on it. I know I was.
Hope this helps you some! Happy 4th of July!

MBT shoes - walk like the Masai
I was absolutely fascinated by the videos about the MBT (Masai Balance Technology) shoes. The technology seems to make sense; and, how can we argue with Swiss engineering!
How did you find out about these shoes? Were they recommended to you by someone? Were you able to get a prescription for them? How long have you been wearing them?
Funny about the flip flops - what we take for granted!
I found a report on testing the MBT shoes:
Study: Tim Vernon, et. al.
"Changes in gait characteristics of a normal, healthy population due to an unstable shoe construction" The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, UK. August, 2004. (pdf)

Re: MBT shoes/Ankle fusion
Hi Alysia,
My orthopedic surgeon told me about them and also mentioned rocker bottom shoes. I did get a prescription for them but the store I bought them at did not deal with insurance companies, so it was an out of pocket expense for me. I've worn them since Oct. 2006 and they really do work. It provides the heel to toe movement I need in order to walk without a limp.
In a prior post I listed the MBT shoes and Curves Toning Sandal. I really like the toning sandal and was just on Avon's website and came across a sneaker (Curves® for Women Leg Toning Sneaker) -- I'll be trying them out as well! http://shop.avon.com/shop/product.asp?pf...
I know it advertises “leg toning” but with a fused ankle we lose all range of motion and shoes with a rocker bottom provide the support we need. Leg toning is just an added bonus for me :-)
Has any one else used either product? If so, do you like them?
Thanks for the article you posted!!

therapy
anyone have any comments about therapy they have received after an ankle fusion?? When did you start therapy? did it make the pain worse initially...then hopefully decreased pain?? What type of exercises did any of you do (or are you doing now??)
thanks for any input!!!!!!!!!!!

PT
Hi,
I didn't start PT until after I was out of the walking boot (so that was almost 3 months after surgery). PT will be pretty easy since you foot doesn't move. I was in PT for at least 6 months it started off slow (not to much pain) and slowly progressed to more intense exercises. I did a lot of strengthening, core and balancing exercises. My swelling was pretty bad around the ankle so they did a lot of massage to keep it down. The thing that hurt the worst for me was when they massaged on the incision, I know it was for a good cause but hurt like heck.
I interviewed a couple of PTs before I started therapy. Not all of them are familiar with ankle fusions so it was important for me to know who was going to provide the best care. I actually had one of them try to move my ankle! I had to stop him and remind him that it wouldn't move no matter how hard he tried. Needless to say..he wasn't my therapist.
Are you having any lower back pain? I did after being in the cast and walking boot for so long. So we did some exercises for that as well.
When will you start therapy?

So Good to Hear of others with fusions
I am so happy to find this site too, seemed like I was the only one who had it done! I can't believe how long it seems that all of you had to recover. Mine was so fast, but again, my was done arthoscopically, and I'm guessing done of yours was? I had to travel over 100 miles to find a doctor who did it that way, but it was worth it.
I had 8 years of pain free, now the arthritis has developed below the fusion and is just horrible pain again. I like the thought of an MRI that someone mentioned, never had that done and maybe there is something fractured, etc. that is causing my pain. I am currently using an Arizona brace (a custom orthotic) that goes from mid calf to my toes. It is leather, and hard material, and laces up. It has given some relief for the last six months, but the pain is getting worse even with the brace. I have lots of pins and screws (which they were unable to remove from my original break) still in my ankle. I have also been fortunate in that I do not have to wear orthopedic shoes. I wear New Balance tennis shoes and can walk the best with them. Vanity is no longer a priority for me, pain free and comfort work. I limp badly when barefoot so that doesn't happen very often, even around the house I usually have to wear something to raise my heal just a little. Oh yeah, I will be 62 this month, am about 25 lbs. overweight, have osteoarthritis in my back, neck, all my fingers, both knees (need a knee replacement now) and now my foot. I have trouble doing any kind of exercise due to my arthritis, so losing weight is difficult for me. I recently joined weight watchers and lost 10 lbs. so am hoping the weight lose will help my joints.
Good hearing from all of you. I love reading your stories.

I'm looking at Ankle Fusion this Fall... Please Advise
Are there any alternatives I should be looking at prior to the ankle fusion that my surgeon is scheduling for this fall? I had cortisone shots today... such pain... I'm back on my crutches again and icing and ibuprofen, hopefully the shot takes effect after the 24 hours as my doctor advised. I know I have weight to lose and have joined Weight Watchers too... any change is a good one.
Please let me know when you knew for sure to have the surgery. I am only 45, I want to enjoy my time with my family and be active... but the pain is near intolerable even with a happy and positive attitude. Please advise. BTW, these shoes... they sound great, where can I buy them in the Vancouver area (Canada), thanks!!

It is Worth IT
I put off the fusion for years because I was so afraid of it. Now I wish I had done it years before because it gave me a whole new "active" part of my life. I too, had such severe pain that it limited my activities of daily living. Once the healing was done, I had a pain free life and I just couldn't believe it was possible. Of course, there are some adjustments to be made, but that was nothing compared to being rid of the constant, pain, swelling, and throbbing. Go for it girl, you won't be sorry. One word of advice though, see if you can find a doctor who does it arthoscopically, rather than the traditional way. Recovery is sooooooo much faster and less pain. I was up and walking very fast, compared to 3-6 months with the traditional procedure. I'm guessing my no weight bearing experience to be about 3 weeks only. (I'm having trouble remembering since it was done in 1998)
Keep me posted.

Ankle Fusion on Wednesday
I will be having an ankle fusion on Wednesday in Nashville. Since hardware and bone spurs will need to be removed, the surgeon will be performing the traditional "open" surgery. Since I am a teacher, I am trying to give my principal a projected return date. However, after reading the posts, I am not sure the 3-month leave I told her will be sufficient. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Ankle Fusion
Dear Tammy,
You probably will get by with three months, I did great in the beginning, make sure you get the game ready it is ice machine with compression. It helps with the pain, everyone told me elevate and ice, elevate and ice. It is great advice. I also got a scooter, you put your knee on it to get around great in the house or at school. I went shopping with my scooter and all kinds of things, I rented mine from my doctor. I believe the more you move the quicker you heal.
Now my problem, My fusion was in Jan. 08 after 4months it started really hurting it turns out I have alot of pain in my talar tendon. apparently it is swollen, I got a second opinion and my new doctor put me on a course of steroids, within 24 hours what a difference. good luck Taffy Harlan

Had ankle fusion in
Had ankle fusion in December- expect 8-12 weeks. You will be put into a walking boot at about 6 weeks- this gives you some mobility though they say you cannot drive - depends which foot is operated on.Once out of the boot, standing for an amount of time does become uncomfortable but you can get by with the use of crutches - first two then one. It will be a long recovery no matter what they say- you can probably expect 6-8 months for complete recovery. PT helps a great deal as do orthodics.
Best of luck!

Re: ankle fusion on Wednesday
Tammy,
I just read your post, and although I have no advice on your projected recovery period (I hope someone is able to get back to you in the next few days!), I wanted to wish you well during your surgery.
Take care, and let us know how your surgery goes!
