Do women compete against each other, more than support each other?

I saw that the Williams' sisters were up against each other in today's Wimbledon finals. Venus beat her sister Serena in two sets.

After, she talked about making sure to not celebrate too loudly or make a huge fuss, bearing in mind that her win meant her sister's loss. Their Mom watched but their Dad flew back to the States rather than watch his two daughters fight it out on Center Court! In concession, Serena said she was happy for her sister and at least one of them won!

Declaration of Independence

The Fourth of July is a nice reminder about our personal independence.

When I talk about independence with my female friends, what we mean is that we are very much OK on our own. I adore my husband, Ray, but I am also an independent woman. I think that is part of what he loves about me.

No matter what our marital or boyfriend status may be at the moment, it is a nice weekend to reflect on the fact that each of us is already complete, by ourselves.

Viva Independence!

For women who are suffering from postpartum depression and need help now, there is a great hotline that I found at PPD Hope (www.ppdhope.com). The number is: (877) PPD-HOPE, or (877) 773-4673. I called it myself this evening just to check it out and make sure that a live person answers. Sure enough, a woman answered the line and confirmed that a live person answers 24 hours every day. You have options to receive free literature on PPD and/or get in touch with their peer support program.

Scientists: Watermelon Yields Viagra-Like Effects

LUBBOCK, Texas - A slice of cool, fresh watermelon is a juicy way to top off a Fourth of July cookout and one that researchers say has effects similar to Viagra — but don't necessarily expect it to keep the fireworks all night long.

Watermelons contain an ingredient called citrulline that can trigger production of a compound that helps relax the body's blood vessels, similar to what happens when a man takes Viagra, said scientists in Texas, one of the nation's top producers of the seedless variety.

WEDNESDAY, July 2 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they've taken a significant stride forward in understanding how relaxation techniques such as meditation, prayer and yoga improve health: by changing patterns of gene activity that affect how the body responds to stress.

The changes were seen both in long-term practitioners and in newer recruits, the scientists said.

Would You Flip That Switch?

This takes me back to college and my Psych 101 days. More than 50 years after the fact, many psychologists, philosophers and the like are still debating the tests of Stanley Milgram.

In a series of about 20 experiments, hundreds of decent, well-intentioned people agreed to deliver what appeared to be increasingly painful electric shocks to another person, as part of what they thought was a learning experiment. The “learner” was in fact an actor, usually seated out of sight in an adjacent room, pretending to be zapped.

What should you do when you have a fear of leaving the house?

You have gotten ready for work, fed the dog, turned off the stove, turned off the lights, locked the doors and locked your garage. You even double checked that you did everything before finally going to work that morning. Now, you are sitting at your desk at work in a calm environment, but you can’t focus on your work. You are feeling a little worried, perhaps even perspiring a little, chewing on your pen and constantly looking at the clock wondering if you should risk a brief trip back home. What is your worry?
