Stores around town have already stocked their shelves with Halloween decorations and bags of sweet treats. My downfall is candy corn, especially the type with chocolate. Made with real cocoa, of course.
A 10-oz bag packs 140 calories in a serving of 22 pieces. The candy corn is so popular that, if placed end to end, there would be enough to go from California to China and half way back (is that going East or West from San Francisco?) Add to this that October 30th is National Candy Corn Day.

According to the US Department of Labor,
"Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country." The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882.

I went to my first yoga class recently. My husband gave me a gift certificate. I think it’s his way of getting me out of the house and away from the Home Shopping Network.

A California women is the initial customer of a South Korean company that claims to be the world's first successful commercial canine cloning service. Bernann McKinney received five puppies Tuesday that were cloned from her late pitbull Booger.
His frozen cells were brought to RNL Bio of Seoul, South Korea, in March and nurtured before formal cloning work began in May, the Associated Press reported. RNL identified the puppies as Booger's genuine clones and reconfirmation tests are being conducted by Seoul National University scientists.

There's one in every crowd, the so-called buddy who is really a drain on your emotions and makes you question your friendship. Take this fun quiz to see if it's time to tell your toxic friend to take a hike - without you!
Is there a toxic "friend" in your life? How did you deal with the person?

The Good and the Bad of Children’s Books
It wasn’t that long ago that various media (frommagazines toblogs)spoke up in disbelief over My Beautiful Mommy, a children’s book by Michael Salzhauer. Anything I have to say about the book won’t be anything new, but needless to say, it’s problematic given its glamourisation of plastic surgery.
Some good news, though? Well, it seems it’s been available for some time now, but I got an email from Susan Johnston this week about her book,Princess Bubble. From the website:

As I try to write this I am Flashing. I had a Hysterectomy 2 and 1/2 years ago. I am 55 years old. Ever since the surgery I have massive mood swings, hot flashes and night sweats. I can't sleep without a sleeping pill and now I add a muscle relaxer because of my resistance to the sleeping pills. I take Estratest but does not seem to help much. I have been on anti-depressants for 20 years my dosage had to be increased since the surgery. I read your article in the newpaper today and copied it at work.

The Bachelorette Reminds Me Why I am Single
Did you see The new Bachelorette, DeAnna, the other night? I watched most of it while cleaning up and my thoughts were, “This is the best you have?” DeAnna is from Newnan, GA. I grew up right down the road so I wanted to check out the show. The Bachelorette is only 26; so you would think they could find great single guys in that age group! Maybe now that she has eliminated 10 guys; some of these men will show more depth or character.

I didn't pick these from a magazine or anything, and they are probably not the best (and certainly not the only!) ways to go a little green but here are some of the things I do to help me, my family and my environment. We're definitely not perfect (we have two cars and a sprinkler system!) but we're trying...
