(HealthDay News) -- The risk and number of errors during biopsy analysis can be drastically reduced by instituting labeling systems for specimen bottles, a new study says.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., which conducted the study, is proposing that busy labs add radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags to track and automate identification of biopsy specimens taken during gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures.

Barbara Dehn: Digital Mammography

I just had my first mammogram using digital technology! What an incredible breakthrough. No more films to carry, no more little bandaid like stickies to mark areas of concern. And, there was a nifty top panel that didn't make me feel as if I was an orange being put through the squeezer. Ouch, they tell you to hold your breath, but the pain can be so intense that you can't help but gasp.

Online Labs: Ordering Tests with No Doctor Recommendation?

What do you think about online laboratories? There are so many out there (similar to a recent post about online pharmacies), and I'm curious if anyone has tried them, and have found them credible?

I am worried about people ordering their own lab tests without a doctor's approval or recommendation, for many reasons:
1. Self-diagnosis is not always the best way to go. I think the ideal is to have a healthy patient-doctor partnership.
2. False-negatives and false-positives. Tests have different rates of "false" results based on a number of factors, that they lay person is unaware of.

It all started with the Personal Healthcare Journal for Seniors.

My mother-in-law sees five different healthcare providers and was having trouble remembering who said what. After much research I created a tool to help her record and track her medical information. Check it out at www.mycarenecessities.com

The book has been out for just six weeks and the response has been amazing - not so much from the seniors but from the baby-boomer generation.
