A newly published study links the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV, to lung cancer, adding lungs to the list of organs scientists say are susceptible to cancer as a result of contracting the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States.
Recent studies have found connections between HPV and cancers of the mouth and throat, but the University of Louisville study released late last week is the first to associate the infection with lung cancer.

FRIDAY, April 25 (HealthDay News) -- Although smoking is well-established as an independent risk factor for lung cancer, two new studies suggest that two different viral infections might boost a smoker's already substantial risk for developing the disease.

TUESDAY, April 15 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they've created a synthetic vaccine that can be delivered as a nasal spray for human papillomavirus -- the source of the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States and a cause of cervical cancer.
The experimental vaccine, tested so far just with mice, also offers protection against different strains of HPV, the researchers said.

Odds are about 50-50 that a sexually active woman will contract the virus that causes cervical cancer at some point in her life, but researchers in Hawaii have discovered that the risk of infection may be just as high in another disturbing site.
Anal infections of human papillomavirus, known as HPV, appear to be as common as cervical infections, according to an article published in the April issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Cervical cancer is the only cancer with a single-known cause – the human papillomavirus (HPV).
And now there is a test to detect it: the HPV test. The Pap alone is not foolproof – it can miss up to half the time! But, when combined with the Pap, the HPV test is virtually 100% accurate in identifying women at risk for cervical cancer, so they can be monitored and treated well before cancer has a chance to develop.
