CHICAGO - One look at Eileen Mulligan lying soberly on the exam table and Dr. John Marshall knew the time for the Big Talk had arrived.
He began gently. The chemotherapy is not helping. The cancer is advanced. There are no good options left to try. It would be good to look into hospice care.

SUNDAY, June 1 (HealthDay News) -- Chemotherapy may be more effective on melanoma tumors if a protein frequently found in the growth can first be disabled, a new study reports.
Researchers at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center found the drug ADH-1, which makes it difficult for cells to properly bind to one another, helped chemotherapy completely destroy the tumors in twice as many patients than with chemo alone. Sixteen people with regionally advanced melanoma, in which the cancerous growths appear and spread mainly on the limbs, participated in the pilot study.

SATURDAY, May 31 (HealthDay News) -- Chemotherapy may reduce fertility in breast cancer survivors, according to a study led by researchers at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
They found that premenopausal breast cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy following surgery were more likely than women who'd never had breast cancer to have diminished ovarian reserve -- the capacity of the ovaries to produce eggs capable of being fertilized.

TUESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) -- A new review of existing research suggests that cancer patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy avoid supplements with high levels of antioxidants.
Although multivitamins may be all right in some cases, even green tea and vitamin A or E supplements can spell trouble, said review author Dr. Brian Lawenda, clinical director of radiation oncology at Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

EVERY 13 MINUTES someone dies from breast cancer. But did you know that almost 100 percent of all government and private funding supports ways to fight breast cancer rather than prevent it?
That’s right. After 30 years of research and billions of dollars spent, we still don’t know the cause of this deadly disease. And while an abundance of funding is pouring in to advance mechanical forms of fighting breast cancer such as chemo therapy and radiation, there is basically no research being administered that looks at the cause of breast cancer.

THURSDAY, May 15 (HealthDay News) -- Adding chemotherapy to other treatments being giving to patients with mesothelioma, a lung cancer usually linked to asbestos exposure, does not appear to improve either survival or quality of life.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), which is usually fatal, is a cancer of the protective lining that covers the lungs. Asbestos is still produced or used in large quantities in countries such as Russia, China, Canada, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Zimbabwe, India and Thailand.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Blacks with rectal cancer are 23 percent less likely to get chemotherapy than whites, even when they see a cancer specialist, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.
They also found that blacks were 12 percent less likely to get radiation therapy than whites. The study is the latest to show that blacks in the United States get less treatment for cancer than whites and are more apt to die from their cancers.
Both blacks and whites in the study saw cancer specialists at about the same rate, suggesting that reasons other than access to a specialist may be playing a role.
