(HealthDay News) -- Stimulant treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) significantly cuts the odds that adolescent girls will smoke, drink alcohol or use drugs, a new Massachusetts General Hospital study shows.
The finding parallels previous studies in boys, the team note.
People with ADHD are at significantly increased risk for cigarette smoking and substance abuse. In the past, there were concerns that treatment of ADHD with stimulant drugs such as Ritalin might increase the risk of drug or alcohol abuse.

I hate to be such an old misery guts on a nice day like Father's Day.
But why is the news on AIDS still so terrible?
Why has a completely avoidable disease taken millions of women's lives and rendered children unwanted, unloved and uncared for? And why are so many babies still born with this disease?

A recent article in the New York Times said that the rate of deaths caused by prescription and other legal drugs (in Florida) was three times the rate of deaths caused by all illicit drugs combined!
Do you think there is a prescription drug abuse epidemic? Is it happening in your community or elsewhere? What can we do about keeping our medicine and other drugs (including alcohol) out of the hands of the mis-users?
Have your or a loved one had a problem with addiction to any prescription or non-prescription drugs? What helped you overcome this?

I find this story about Asian teen smokers very disturbing:
500,000 Asian Youth Targeted by Tobacco Companies: WHO.
It's bad enough that our own teens are smoking. But, when Asian teens bent on adopting Western ways think there is something glamorous about smoking, something needs to be done about marketing tobacco to young folks. Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing cigarett manufacturers put out of business. Somehow, though, I doubt that's going to happen any time soon.
