Do You Support the Use of Medical Marijuana?

Great article today out of the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times about medical marijuana ...

"Lately, however, residents of Mendocino County, like those in other parts of California, are wondering if the state’s embrace of marijuana for medicinal purposes has gone too far.

Medical marijuana was legalized under state law by California voters in 1996, and since then 11 other states have followed, even though federal law still bans the sale of any marijuana. But some frustrated residents and law enforcement officials say the California law has increasingly and unintentionally provided legal cover for large-scale marijuana growers — and the problems such big-money operations can attract."

The article goes on to say "For all the federal and local opposition, marijuana as medicine has become an accepted part of life in many communities in California. Advocates say the drug helps patients with everything from the wasting effects of chemotherapy and AIDS to treatment of anxiety and headaches."

What's your take? Should states that have legalized medical marijuana roll back access? Change their laws? Should states that haven't legalized medical marijuana do so and learn from California's mistakes?

Medical Pot?

Yes, I support the use of marijuana for medical uses.

Primarily because I do not believe it's the government's role to tell me what's proper health treatment and what isn't.

If the government is in charge of my body, then the government can tell me what I can and cannot take.

But The Deceleration of Independence said, I was endowed by my Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

So, clearly I have the right to select my own health treatments.

As an asthmatic, marijuana is not an option for me, but that does not keep me from fighting for your right to have your medical decisions be free of government interference.

To your health.

-Todd

Legal weed for medicinal purposes

Absolutely. I see no reason why it shouldn't be legalized, if it has been found to aid some people in either pain treatment, or even disease arrest.

Perhaps legalizing pot would help curtail the illicit production (emphasis on "help") so that legitimate income could be made from harvesting for pharmaceuticals.

Medical marijuana

As an RN, YES, I fully support a patient's right to use cannabis and feel strongly that the federal prohibition of this medicine is cruel and unfounded. The various grow rooms may be a problem to some Californians, but don't blame the plant or the patients. Patients need to get their medicine from someone/someplace. Most don't know how to grow it or may be too ill to grow it. Cannabis has a remarkably wide margin of safety compared to most medications legally available today. And a note to Todd above, cannabis can be helpful for those with asthma. Rather than smoke the cannabis, an asthma patient would benefit more by using a vaporizer (gets the cannabis hot enough to release the vapors, but not hot enough for combustion (and smoke). I encourage readers to go to www.medicalcannabis.com for more information on the therapeutic use of cannabis.
